About Corey Plante
Corey is an Associate Editor with Polygon that oversees the Tabletop Gaming section with a special emphasis on Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. A forever Dungeon Master who's built his own homebrew fantasy universe, Corey has also been playing Magic for more than 25 years. He's been writing about various forms of entertainment media for more than 15 years. Seven of those were spent at Inverse where he covered TV, film, and video games, eventually growing into the role of Associate Gaming Editor. Corey also has bylines at Kotaku, IGN, Vulture, Fanbyte, and more.
What did you play or watch that changed your life?
Corey had always been D&D-curious but was fortunate enough to bond with a group of other nerdy adults while he lived in New York City for about five years. It wistfully became something he wished he'd been doing his whole life. His first character was a Dwarf Cleric named Clarty, a callback to a character he played years prior in the MMORPG EverQuest Online Adventures on the PlayStation 2. From there, he eventually settled into a position as his table's most frequent Dungeon Master, developing a homebrew fantasy universe based on the trilogy of novels he hopes to write one day.
What's your origin story?
Corey grew up with games as a major part of his life. His maternal grandmother had a peculiar obsession with the Zelda franchise. He also had a close older cousin who introduced him to Final Fantasy at a young age. In the late '90s, he became obsessed with Pokémon like most kids his age, except he was the one organizing TCG matches and Game Boy battles in the bushes at recess when both got banned — and he won every time. As Corey matured, so did his tastes, and he became an avid fan of Magic: The Gathering around the turn of the century.
What's a recent obsession?
Having joined Polygon in November 2025 with a primary focus on tabletop gaming, Corey's enthusiasm for Magic: The Gathering has increased exponentially. He spends countless late nights poring over cards he never got rid of — some of them nearly 30 years old — trying to build new Commander decks.
