Roblox Defends Controversial Age Checks, Says “Cost of Not Acting Is Greater”

A necessary evil?

It’s been almost half a year since Roblox began rolling out its age checks, which require players to undergo either a Facial Age Estimation or present ID verification to unlock chatting, as well as a few days since the reveal of its new Age-Based Content feature and approach to creator content.

But although some saw the additions as a step forward on paper, especially regarding how lackluster the company’s efforts have been in relation to child and overall user safety, many have also continued to express their dissatisfaction over the recent changes, something Matt Kaufman — Roblox‘s Chief Safety Officer — addressed directly while responding to user Ascended_Star in Roblox‘s most recent Publishing Requirements + Roblox Kids & Select AMA.

According to Kaufman; ”Our job as a platform is to balance the needs of every part of our community — players, parents, creators, and influencers. We’ve heard loudly from parents and policymakers that they need stronger assurances about the content available to our youngest users, and we take that just as seriously as we take feedback from creators and influencers.”

When talking specifically about the age-checks, he then revealed that although he understands their unpopularity, ”the honest reality is that the cost of not acting is greater than the friction of acting. Without these requirements, Roblox risks losing access in entire regions, which means fewer players, smaller audiences, and less opportunity for every creator and influencer building on this platform. Some Roblox everywhere is better than full Roblox nowhere.”

He then concluded by saying: ”Roblox today is not the platform it was five, ten, almost twenty years ago. More responsibilities come with our scale, yes, but there are also exponentially more opportunities to build a real business, reach a global audience, and access more power tools than ever before.” You can check out Kaufman’s full statement in the link above.

All Roblox Publishing Requirements, Explained

Brushed upon above, Roblox‘s new publishing guidelines require that creators perform the mentioned age check, have a good account standing, and have been on the platform for at least 2 days to publish games aimed at users over 16 years old. Those looking to make their content available for all ages must then cross all of the boxes below:

  • Be ID verified
  • Have two-factor authentication enabled
  • Have a Roblox Plus subscription ($4.99 USD per month)

Your experience must also be subjected to and pass the platform’s new Evaluation Process, which includes a trial period to filter out bots and a review by a new AI-powered real-time moderation system. You can check out more on Roblox‘s official announcement.
