Madden 26 Mod Reintroduces Concussions to Raise Awareness About Brain Injuries

For a good cause.

A new mod for Madden 26 looks to bring up one of the most serious and realistic aspects of football that the official series removed years ago: concussions. Released by The Derek Sheely Foundation, the mod, called Modden 26, adds the injury to the game and lets players feel what it’s like to suffer one during gameplay. Injuries aren’t exactly represented well in Madden these days, so this is an excellent addition.

While it’s a cool cosmetic and gameplay-enhancing mod, there’s more to the story here. The motivation behind this involves efforts to raise awareness of the brain injuries in football. As usual, this mod only works on PC, but thankfully, the setup process is pretty simple. Here’s an official message from the creators that explains the importance of this mod:

“The Derek Sheely Foundation created MODDEN 26 to spread concussion awareness and help make the game safer for those who love to play. Derek loved playing football (and football video games). We dedicate this mod to his memory, in the hopes that it will help educate a new generation and change how playing through it is normalized.”

How the MODDEN 26 Mod Works

After you install the mod (simply extracting the mod files to the game’s directory works), the mod allows for concussions to occur naturally during gameplay. If your player takes a big hit and gets diagnosed with a concussion, you’re taken to the blue medical tent for examination. When a player continues playing with a concussion, you’ll see the symptoms: shortness of breath, tinnitus, increased heart rate, headaches, nausea, and extreme light sensitivity.

MODDEN 26 is currently available as a free download for anyone who owns Madden NFL 26 on PC. While it’s only on PC for now, the mod has already generated significant attention from the community, highlighting how gaming can be used for important awareness campaigns.

For anyone unfamiliar, the Derek Sheely Foundation was created to raise awareness of traumatic brain injuries in youth sports. Derek Sheely was a young football player who died at the young age of 22 from a head injury during football practice at Frostburg State University. The foundation (and subsequently the mod) emphasizes how important early recognition of symptoms is fr player safety and recovery.
