More, faster service slated by BART Train speed to be increased, transfers enhanced June 22 By Steven A. Chin OF F THE EXAMINER STAFF BART riders will soon be treated to a new and improved schedule that will offer faster service and more convenient train-to-train transfers during evenings and Sundays. Slated to begin Monday, June 22, it is the "most significant schedule change for BART in more than 10 years," said General Manager Frank Wilson. "The trains will actually be moving faster," said BART spokesman Mike Healy. "We've made a lot of technical changes during the past year which will allow us to run a faster schedule." Changes, he said, include new electronic equipment on trains and altering the system that maintains distances between trains. Under the new schedule, trains are expected to travel at an average speed of 36 mph, including station stops, up from 32.1 mph. Top speeds will remain about 80 mph along long stretches like the trans-Bay tube, Healy said. For riders, that translates to a reduction in travel time of about 10 percent, or 6 minutes from one end of the system to the other, Healy said. And waiting time for evening and Sunday transfers will be cut by about a third. Passengers can now wait up to 20 minutes if they miss their connection in the evenings, Healy r noted. "We're trying to eliminate that wait considerably, and in some cases, there'll be no waiting time," he added. For the quickest trip under the new schedule, passengers coming from the San Francisco or Fremont lines after 7 p.m. or on Sundays should make all train-to-train transfers at the 12th Street/City Center Station in Oakland; passengers coming from the Richmond or Concord lines should make all such transfers at the MacArthur Station. New schedules will be available at stations Monday, and BART staff will be on hand to answer questions during commute periods. On Monday, June 22, new pocket schedules also will be available at all stations. a
