Olivia Carville

New America Fellow, 2027

Olivia Carville is an investigative reporter at Bloomberg and the author of multiple cover stories for Bloomberg Businessweek magazine. Her reporting has influenced legislation and exposed corporate wrongdoing in her home country of New Zealand, as well as in Canada and the United States. For more than five years, she has investigated the dangers of the digital world, uncovering safety failures inside some of the most powerful technology companies. Her work includes co-hosting a six-part podcast on the devastating impact of deepfake porn and helping produce the Emmy Award-winning documentary Can’t Look Away: The Case Against Social Media, which is based on her reporting. A duPont-Columbia and George Polk Award winner, Carville has twice been named Global Business Journalist of the Year by the Women’s Economic Roundtable. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, where she teaches investigative reporting, and sits on the board of the New York Financial Writers’ Association.

Carville is writing a narrative nonfiction book (under contract with Knopf Doubleday) about the landmark social media addiction litigation. Lost to the Machines tells the story of social media’s Big Tobacco moment and chronicles the dramatic legal battle—led by attorneys, whistleblowers, and victims—to hold tech companies accountable for the physical and psychological harms that unregulated social media poses to children. The first of these cases went to trial in early 2026 and ended in the most damaging verdict to hit the social media industry in a quarter century.
