Designing for Extended Reality Games: Tips and Ideas

This title was summarized by AI from the post below.

Hi everyone~ Previously I’ve shared some thoughts on design decisions on making extended reality games but there are more! Adding a few more to the list here and hopefully it may provide more ideas on the thought process and perhaps have it as a mental sticky note while going through production. 🔘Sometimes experienced and new players might forget the location of the A/B and X/Y buttons on their controller. Make use of the passthrough function or have a virtual controller within the game to guide them to the buttons on the controller as it is not advisable to take off a headset to find them since it can break momentum and immersion. ✋ Object interaction is one aspect, have an environment or scenario that is suitable for them to learn and practice, such as extending hands, gripping object with trigger or selecting object using buttons etc. While having players bend down to pick up an item, have a “magnetic” property that attracts an item to their palm, or you could also consider physics design to make it more interactive. 📚 On the narrative aspect, make use of audio logs, visual cues, and environmental storytelling. These are ambient components that should blend well within the game and also consider hiding narrative elements in places the player must crouch, reach, or move to discover, which is leveraging the physical space of your player to potentially enhance worldbuilding and storytelling. 🌌Consider the use of avatars or disembodied hands that match the player's height and proportions, while also factoring in spatial anchors such as shadow or body silhouettes to reinforce physical self for users when they dive into an immersive world. The goal here is to enable users to “accept” the new reality they are in when wearing the headset. 📐For the environment and surrounding, remember as much as possible to maintain consistent real-world object sizing, keeping it a 1:1 scaling, such as a handle or perhaps a cup. And for mixed reality, ensure there is option and capabilities for dynamic environmental scaling as physical spaces can vary in different sizes. Remember when making a reality game you are building it for the full body experience. Hopefully these are useful and feel free to chime in more thoughts! #Gaming #VR #VirtualReality #MR #MixedReality #GameDevelopment
