Signals like ANR rates and CPU load can tell you what performance issues are affecting your app, but not the exact lines of code they came from. I was really impressed by how the team at Datadog, a SaaS monitoring platform, bypassed common regression bottlenecks using the system-level ProfilingManager API (introduced in Android 15). ProfilingManager essentially lets apps programmatically collect data — like call stack samples or field traces — from real Android devices. Datadog worked with Google engineers to integrate ProfilingManager into their Real User Monitoring and Continuous Profiling platforms, giving Android devs code-level insights for diagnosing performance bugs instantly. What if you could keep all of your side projects online forever, only pay when people actually visit them, and not deal with any serverless constraints and complexity? It turns out that the infrastructure we built at VeilStream for preview/staging environments also solves this problem. We’re experimenting with a simple model: deploy a normal full-stack app (including databases,) attach a custom domain, and let it scale down to zero when nobody is using it. When someone visits weeks later, they see a loading screen while the app wakes up. We’re now cold-booting applications in about 30 seconds which is not a problem for many side quests that you'd rather keep in an "archived but accessible" state than taking entirely offline. Unlike low-cost tiers from some other providers, you are welcome to use these environments for commercial purposes. The goal is simple: side projects, demos, and prototypes that can stay online indefinitely without idle hosting bills, platform-specific limitations, serverless complexity, or commercial constraints.
