I was terrible at tech when I started. Not because I couldn’t learn it. Because after years at sea, I was used to a very different kind of work. Onboard, problems were physical. A machine wasn’t behaving. A parameter was off. Something needed attention. You inspected it. You understood it. You fixed it. Tech was different. New language. New tools. New ways of thinking. There were days when I genuinely felt like I knew nothing. I had to ask basic questions. Sit through conversations I barely understood. Learn terms everyone else seemed completely comfortable with. And accept something that wasn’t easy after nearly two decades of experience: I was a beginner again. But that was probably the most important part. Because slowly, things started making sense. Building for an industry instead of operating within it. I still have a lot to learn. But I no longer feel uncomfortable saying, “I don’t know this yet.” That one word changes everything. You don’t have to be good when you start. You just have to be willing to be bad long enough to become better.

DAY 9 VISIBILITY CHALLENGE TechCrush 3 things I wish someone told me before I started learning tech: 1. You don't need to know everything before you start. I used to think I had to understand every concept, tool, and term before I could even call myself a "beginner." Truth is, you learn by doing, not by waiting until you feel ready. Nobody starts ready. You become ready. 2. Comparison will slow you down more than confusion will. It's so easy to look at other people's progress and feel like you're behind. But everyone's timeline is different. Some days you'll move fast, some days you'll feel stuck and that's normal. Your pace isn't a reflection of your potential. 3. Consistency beats motivation, every single time. Motivation comes and goes, but showing up on the days you don't feel like it is what actually builds skill. I've learned more from the boring, repetitive practice than from the "exciting" breakthrough moments. If you're just starting your tech journey, be patient with yourself. This isn't a race. Focus on one skill at a time and keep building. 2️⃣ Mistakes are part of the journey. You’ll get stuck, make mistakes, and sometimes feel like giving up. That doesn’t mean you’re not good enough—it means you’re learning. 3️⃣ Don’t compare your journey to someone else’s. Everyone starts from a different place and learns at a different pace. Stay consistent, ask questions, practice, and trust your progress. Your tech journey is not a race. It’s a journey of growth, discovery, and becoming better every day. Your prompts are fine. The problem is that you're marking your own homework in a subject you haven't learnt yet. Nobody tells you this, because the alternative doesn't sell. Prompting can be taught in an afternoon. It fits in a carousel. It feels like progress on day one. Judgement takes years, can't be packaged, and makes a terrible landing page. So the market sells you the cheap half and goes quiet about the expensive half. You leave with a better prompt and the same inability to tell a strong output from a plausible one. And plausible is the dangerous category. A thin, generic, subtly wrong answer reads exactly like a good one right up until someone who actually knows the field reads it. That person is usually an interviewer, a hiring manager, or the client you just billed. The fix isn't a better prompt. It's an external standard. Try this today. Take the deliverable you'd have to produce in the role you want. A strategy memo, a test plan, a risk assessment, a hiring scorecard. Find the field's published version of what that document must contain. Then score your AI draft in three columns. Present. Missing. Asserted with no evidence. That third column is where switchers get caught. Confident sentences with nothing underneath them. (It's the reason Rohvaa puts a quality layer over every agent. You can't be your own quality gate in a field you're still entering.) So which camp are you in. 🧑💻 The technology landscape is evolving at breakneck speed. Every week there is a new AI model, a new framework or a new way of doing things are coming up. A question I ask myself now adays: How do we stay motivated and keep up without getting completely overwhelmed? In this fast-moving tech era the most important skill isn't knowing a specific software or tool — it's ones ability to teach yourself what comes next. I believe the answer comes down to one critical mindset and that is “Self-Service Learning” Rather than waiting for a formal training programs or waiting for someone to hand us a manual or wait to see what suggestion comes up in my youtube or news feeds. I think we must take complete ownership of our own upskilling. True motivation rarely comes from forcing yourself to read a textbook. It should come from a genuine desire to build and tinker. For me, whether that means experimenting with network configurations in a home lab, spinning up self-hosted AI tools or designing automated workflows to see how they can work for me in real world - is what keeps my spark alive. And all these doesn't have to me work related. Some of these workflow can be for my personal use or could be used by my family as well. The concept of "self-service" means becoming your own helpdesk for your career and career/knowledge growth. When you hit a roadblock, you don't wait for an answer. You dig into the documentation & find out resources and you figure it out. That hands-on exercise is exactly where the deepest learning happens. It is impossible to learn everything all at once. I pick a specific, small project that excites me. The satisfaction of getting a new system to work is the best fuel to keep my motivation high. I feel in a fast-moving era, the most important skill isn't knowing a specific software—it is one’s ability to teach yourself what comes next. How are you keeping your skills sharp these days? What if the best way to understand your own career transition was to build a tool for it? As I began exploring a transition from clinical dentistry to AI in healthcare, I kept asking myself: Which of my existing skills actually transfer? What should I learn next? How do I bridge the gap without starting from zero? Instead of searching endlessly for answers, I decided to build one. Today, I'm sharing Callis, a low-code career transition planner that helps people move from their current role to the career they aspire to. Why the name "Callis"? In Latin, callis means 'a path' or 'trail' because every career transition begins by finding your own path. Users can select their current and target roles, enter their existing skills, or optionally upload their CV for a more personalized analysis. Callis then generates a tailored roadmap highlighting transferable skills, skill gaps, learning resources, portfolio ideas, and practical next steps. The interesting part is that I originally built this tool for my own transition. Building Callis taught me much more than software. It introduced me to product thinking, user experience, workflow design, and the process of turning an idea into something people can actually use. The project started as a prototype in Lovable. As it grew beyond the platform's free usage limits, I continued development in GitHub, configured the required APIs, and deployed it using Vercel. Everything was built on an Android phone, with zero budget, coming from a healthcare background and no formal software engineering experience. This project has only strengthened my curiosity about AI, digital health, and product development. More importantly, it's encouraged me to keep building, and a few more projects are already in progress. I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback.
