Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s Post

On December 17, 2004, President George W. Bush signed the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act (IRTPA). This sweeping legislation, catalyzed by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, aimed to completely transform America's national security enterprise.   Though the idea of establishing an overarching intelligence agency dated back to at least the 1950s, the IRTPA formally created the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to strengthen, integrate, and lead America's intelligence community. We officially began operations on April 22, 2005.   Over the coming months, join us as we share the stories of this unified mission that helps keep the nation and our allies safe. #ODNI20

Key phrase: “keep the nation and our allies safe.” Let’s repeat that last: “and our allies.” The concerns in this regard are re NATO, and Ukraine, in the next few years. POTUS Biden cleaned up our reputation internationally, but someone we know has already angered and offended some of our oldest and most reliable allies, who have given their blood and treasure right along with us here and there and there and then, sine qua non. That trust needs be preserved. Obviously, because not even we can or should “go it alone,” and especially not abandon our friends in their hours of peril and need. That Should be able to go without saying, but…, sighs…, here we are. Please address how the 2018 US CLOUD Act plays into the equation: past, present, future. Many Americans are trustingly unaware of its existence, not to mention its ramifications.

Boy, there's a lot of turf to cover on this one. The centralization of power in any government entity can potentially pose problems for the country. However, by in large those tasked with protecting America, have done well given the enormity of the task. All our government agencies should be guided by a moral ethic that places integrity, honesty and a commitment to Constitutional principles at the forefront. We now know factually what a government that abandons principles in pursuit of power looks like. Congress has placed far too much power and responsibility on the shoulders of a mere handful of agencies. When in fact, some of those designated responsibilities could be done by brother agencies that share the same powers. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

As we move forward, 20 years later, the idea of oversight across the intelligence agency is good. However, ODNIneeds to make sure they are providing oversight and not trying to manage programs. Leaner and meaner, with less contractor staff needs to be practiced. Happy 20th anniversary and many more good productive years for the country ahead of you.

Happy 20th Birthday ODNI! Semper Fi, Rusty
