What's one business decision you wish you'd made sooner? For us, it was systemising our budgeting process, I know I know, we should know better! 🫣 We used to create spreadsheets we didn't look at. Now, we track monthly and make decisions based on real numbers. How about you? What did you delay that, in hindsight, was a game-changer?

Here's how we actually connect a founder's strategy to their financials: (Most people assume this happens automatically) We start with something like a Business Model Canvas. It forces a conversation founders keep avoiding: what actually drives this business, before anyone opens a spreadsheet. Most owners can tell you their revenue number and their highest costs. But few have truly thought through what truly “drives” the business. Once that's clear, we look at their goals and use a tool like an Impact-Competency matrix to figure out where the team's effort should actually be going. Then, and only then, do we look at whether the financials reflect that focus. Usually they don't. Usually the business is spending time and money on things that feel productive but don't move the 2 or 3 things that actually matter. From there, we cascade it: annual goals become quarterly targets, quarterly becomes monthly, monthly becomes a weekly rhythm. Every weekly number should trace back to something decided in the annual plan. This connection between strategy and execution is, in my view, the real differentiator in this work.

BizCover’s State of Small Business Owners 2026 report reveals the hidden pressure behind business ownership: 📅 31.7% have never taken a full week off since starting their business ⏰ Among owners working 60+ hour weeks, that rises to 60% 🤒 61.2% worked through illness in the past year rather than take time off For owners struggling to carve out time for themselves, small changes can go a long way. Delegating to trusted team members, automating repetitive tasks and reviewing cashflow support options—like a business line of credit or invoice finance—can help ease short-term pressure and create space to step away. Because taking time off isn't neglecting your business. It's part of sustaining both yourself and the business you've worked so hard to build. #TrendingNews #SmallBusinessAustralia #AussieBusiness #BusinessOwners #EntrepreneurLife #WorkLifeBalance
