Position Summary

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the Intermountain Natural History Association (INHA). This position provides strategic leadership, financial stewardship, and operational oversight to advance INHA’s mission of supporting public lands through education, interpretation, publishing, retail services, and collaborative partnerships with federal land management agencies and local communities. The Executive Director ensures organizational sustainability, strengthens partnerships, and leads staff in delivering high-quality programs and services that further conservation and public engagement.

This position generally works Monday–Friday, with additional hours as necessary to ensure smooth operations and support mission-related activities.


Reports To: Board of Directors (through the Board Chair)

Strategic Leadership & Mission Advancement

·        Partner with the Board of Directors in strategic planning, policy development, and organizational growth.

·        Lead implementation of short- and long-term strategic goals aligned with INHA’s mission.

·        Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for INHA and its mission.


·        Strengthen and expand partnerships that support public education, conservation, and stewardship.

Financial Management & Compliance

·        Develop and manage an annual operating budget; provide regular financial reports and analysis to the Board.

·        Ensure sound financial practices, internal controls, and long-term fiscal sustainability.


·        Oversee completion of the annual financial review/audit and IRS Form 990.

·        Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations to maintain nonprofit and tax-exempt status.

·        Identify and pursue opportunities to grow earned and contributed revenue, including retail, publishing, grants, and partnerships.


Operations & Publishing/Retail Management

·        Provide overall leadership of INHA’s retail bookstores, wholesale trade, publishing, and related operations.

·        Ensure operational excellence, inventory management, and customer service consistent with INHA’s mission.

·        Oversee contracts with publishers, authors, photographers, vendors, and partners.


·        Ensure compliance with copyright, trademark, and publishing regulations.

Board Relations & Governance

·        Serve as the primary advisor to the Board on strategic, financial, and operational matters.

·        Prepare Board meeting agendas and materials; attend meetings as a non-voting member.

·        Monitor and advise the Board regarding Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and governance best practices.

·        Recommend committee assignments, organizational structure adjustments, and policy updates.


Partnerships & Agency Relations

·        Serve as primary liaison between INHA, federal land management agencies (NPS, USFS, BLM, BOR, etc.), cooperating associations, and local communities.

·        Coordinate program and operational initiatives in collaboration with agency partners.


·        Administer donations and aid in support of agency programs consistent with INHA’s mission.

·        Provide agency partners with information and training regarding the role of cooperating associations, as needed.


Staff Leadership & Organiza3onal Development

·        Recruit, supervise, and develop staff, fostering a collaborative and mission-driven organizational culture.

·        Establish performance expectations, conduct evaluations, and implement professional development opportunities.

·        Develop personnel policies and procedures for Board of Directors review and approval.

Minimum Qualifications

·        Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, natural resource management, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.


·        Minimum five years of progressively responsible leadership or administrative experience, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.

·        Demonstrated experience in financial management and organizational oversight.


·        Experience working with a Board of Directors and public agency partners preferred.

·        Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and bondable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·        Strong understanding of nonprofit management, financial stewardship, and governance.

·        Knowledge of federal land management agencies and cooperating association models.

·        Strategic planning, organizational leadership, and problem-solving skills.

·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
