The irony of the week: the more capable AI gets, the more human marketing needs to become. It showed up everywhere. Creators are winning because they understand platforms and still know how to tell a story people remember. Joshua SpanierJoshua Spanier post ( https://lnkd.in/p/g57Wq7wi ) on making the most of Cannes resonated with professionals across the industry. Simple, practical, memorable. That’s the point. I met Sunil DesaiSunil Desai at Cannes, and HubSpotHubSpot’s recent Loverboy creative for AEO is a great example of that same idea ( https://lnkd.in/p/gn65KfAU ) : distinctiveness, not just output, is what makes content worth engaging with. LinkedIn’s own research at Cannes made the point at scale. Their new “buyability” framework argues B2B buyers aren’t just optimizing for the best product or price. They’re optimizing for a decision they can defend later, one built on trust, relatability, and peer validation. Relational, not just rational. Even the B2B work being celebrated traced back to companies with consumer storytelling instincts. Enterprise B2B has spent a decade getting good at measurement and efficiency. The opportunity now is pairing that with differentiation. Not instead of performance. Alongside it. It’s bigger than marketing, too. AI is changing how marketing, sales, all the ops, finance, and product need to work together, because customers don’t experience our org chart. They experience one company. Not AI replacing people. People working differently because of AI. The more capable the technology, the more human the business has to be. I’m optimistic for marketing.

Mike Dudgeon shared thisI might be the most dangerous customer in automotive history. Every car I seem to love gets discontinued. - Ford Probe. I’ll take the heat, but it was a fun car. - El Camino. I’ll get some street cred back here. - A two-tone Buick Century, which was an elite high school buddy hauler. - And now, my brand-new F-150 Lightning. Four of my last five cars have been discontinued. I’m noticing a pattern in my own buying, and I'm wondering whether brands miss out by focusing too much on their core fans and not enough on adjacent customers like me. I'm saying it's not my fault. ;) There’s untapped potential in fun, accessories, and community. These are areas where brands like Rivian and Toyota thrive. Ford could earn lasting loyalty if it broadened the Lightning’s image beyond utility and reached those seeking adventure and good ‘ol fun. From the outside, it is also a fascinating reminder of how challenging category creation can be, especially when redefining an icon like the F-150. Ford quite reasonably leaned into what it knows best: capability, utility, and real work getting done. Rationality! That is the brand, and that is the core customer. I keep wondering emotionally: What if Ford had positioned Lightning as a truck for customers like me who are seeking more than just a work vehicle? Nike expanded from elite athletes to everyday users. Why not this? Think the Fun Dad. Active families. Bikes and skis. Tailgates and Home Depot runs. Not replacing a jobsite truck, but expanding the brand's uses. Another discontinued car on my list, but I hope Ford's next positioning brings more fun to the lineup. Put me on the Customer Advisory Board, Ford. Just ignore my illustrious history of car purchasing.

Anytime you see a job title like "Chief Marketing + Communications Officer" or an org called "Marketing + Communications," that's a real red flag that the company doesn't actually understand the job of marketing. Just so we're all on the same page: "communications" is a small, tactical sub-set of the marketing job. As I learned from Ritson, a proper marketer is responsible for research, strategy, and tactics. Within tactics, you've got the four Ps. One of them is "promotion" --- that includes the entire communications lever of a brand. And when people say they work in “Comms,” they usually mean “PR.” That’s one tactic, inside one P, inside one-third of the job. Which makes "communications," at best, about 1% of marketing. Imagine if CFOs called themselves "Chief Finance + Accounts Payable Officers." Or if CROs called themselves "Chief Revenue + Outbound Sales Officers." Or if CTOs called themselves "Chief Technology + Microsoft Word Officers." You'd find that very strange and redundant. So it is with “Marketing + Communications.” Drop the "+ Communications." Just "Marketing." It's cleaner.

Mike Dudgeon liked thisMike Dudgeon liked thisSharing 3 observations from many many conversations with partners and customers at #CannesLions last week: 🎯 Employee skilling: The massive increase in AI costs over the past ~6 months has increased the focus on AI skilling among decision makers. There’s far more urgency around ensuring that employees are using AI tools effectively and in understanding who is truly good at what. Interest in our new LinkedIn connected apps integration (link in comments) continues to increase as a result of this trend. 🏗️ 3P agentic ad products: There’s a ton of excitement around ad campaign management in 3rd party agentic interfaces - came up in almost every conversation. It was harder to find examples of customers using 3rd party agentic solutions at scale in core workflows. Lots of work ahead to manage the evolution from excitement/ experimentation to widespread adoption. 💰 B2B marketing: There’s broad agreement that B2B marketers need solutions built for them - products that put companies, purpose-built attribution models, and B2B value metrics (think Pipeline generation) at the center of their work. The alignment is there - the key will be driving sustained focus across the ecosystem to make it happen. This is the huge opportunity and challenge ahead for our industry, and a top priority for LinkedIn for Marketing. #CannesLions2026 #AI #Advertising #B2BMarketing #Partnerships

Radar is Stripe's AI-powered fraud prevention platform, trained on $1.9+ trillion of payments globally - and I'm looking forward to helping grow its impact across the region. It's a big leap into a space I've long been curious about, one which quietly underpins so much of our daily lives and global economy. Equal parts exciting, humbling, pretty nerve-racking... 2 weeks in and it still feels like Day 1! Grateful to Victoria Zanini Omer Khalid Paul H. Mike Dudgeon liked thisMike Dudgeon liked thisEvery company says they want to be customer obsessed. Then someone suggests talking to customers…and suddenly everyone’s calendar gets really busy. Dashboards, surveys, and metrics are incredibly valuable. But every now and then, sitting next to someone as they try to use your product is a good reminder that customers don’t experience your org chart or your roadmap. They just know whether something is easy or frustrating. Some of the best ideas I’ve seen didn’t come from a spreadsheet. They came from watching someone struggle with something we thought was obvious. The data usually tells you what happened. Talking to customers is how you figure out why.

Mike Dudgeon liked thisMike Dudgeon liked thisOne of my favorite parts of this conversation was the section on “playbooks.” It’s a term that gets thrown around a lot in Enterprise B2B SaaS, and there’s sometimes an assumption that there is one universal enterprise B2B sales playbook to learn and execute. But one of the common reasons sales leaders struggle in new companies is trying to impose a playbook that worked in a different company, with a different product, customer, market position, and stage of growth. Certain principles and methodologies do travel well: MEDDPICC, Command of the Message, clear sales process, strong inspection, consistent coaching, etc, but the “playbook” has to be customized to the context. A simple way to approach it, and one we took in AMER Strat as we’ve been transitioning from PLG to a blend of PLG & SLG: ➡️ Reverse engineer what your top performers are actually doing that is repeatable. For example, our top performers had a high percentage of meetings with specific functional personas and seniority levels, and “closed-won” Champions within those same personas. That helped us refine our ICP for what is an incredibly horizontal and flexible platform. ➡️ Codify a set of leading indicators based on that analysis. For example, number of meetings with specific personas per week, number of on-sites, qualified pipeline created per quarter, etc. ➡️ Build a sales process that maps to how your customers actually buy, with clear, customer-verifiable exit criteria at each stage. This isn’t fixed. The activities and exit criteria will evolve and adapt over time - e.g., we've had to revisit our approach to POCs as we've rolled out new AI solutions. ➡️ Coach individuals to consistently meet those leading indicators. ➡️ Identify the bottlenecks individuals are commonly hitting in the sales process and help them overcome them. For example, if someone if consistently struggling to meet a specific stage exit criteria or perform a particular stage activity. ➡️ Consistently repeat the cycle in order to iterate and evolve the playbook. A big part of a sales leader’s job is to figure out how adapt their “playbook” to the current environment, codify it, turn it into a motion that is easier for more people to repeat, and keep evolving it as the context changes.
