As a team of 11 people across four countries, it was a rare and meaningful opportunity to spend time together in the same place and deepen our existing relationships. We explored Comuna 13, danced salsa, went on a hike overlooking the city, shared meals, and spent hours in conversation reflecting on the responsibility of the work we do. As we head into 2026, we are building on that sense of connection. We remain deeply rooted in our mission to level the playing field within the criminal justice system, while staying ambitious about scaling the impact of our technology and the communities it serves.

After rolling out JusticeText statewide and integrating directly with their case management system earlier this year, it was so rewarding to see the impact firsthand. A special thank you to Brett Schandelson and Koan Mercer for welcoming us and for sharing how so many attorneys across the state are using our technology to better advocate for their clients.

The Council on Criminal Justice is doing just that. I encourage folks to check out their work, and the launch of their Task Force on Artificial Intelligence. I'm a huge supporter of organizations that are thoughtful about how technology can be used to create criminal justice reform, like Ameelio, enabling currently incarcerated individuals to communicate with their families, or the work that JusticeText has done in leveraging AI to help public defenders parse body camera footage. Excited to see what CCJ pushes forward.Devshi Mehrotra reposted thisThe Council on Criminal Justice, in partnership with RAND, is excited to announce the launch of a Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, a national, nonpartisan initiative dedicated to developing standards and evidence-based recommendations to guide the safe, ethical, and effective use of AI in the criminal justice system. Artificial intelligence presents both significant opportunities and formidable challenges for the criminal justice system. In response to the complex and rapidly evolving nature of AI, we must act quickly and thoughtfully to ensure this technology is adopted in ways that maximize benefits, minimize harms, and improve justice. Chaired by former Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, the Task Force includes 14 other leaders representing AI technology developers and researchers, police executives and other criminal justice practitioners, civil rights advocates, community leaders, and formerly incarcerated people. The Task Force’s work is supported by CCJ staff and researchers at RAND, a leading research organization with extensive expertise in criminal justice and emerging technologies. Our eighteenth True Ventures Fellowship came to a close this month, and eleven fellows have headed back to campus after a summer inside AI-native True portfolio companies. This year's program had one organizing idea: AI fluency. When we kicked things off in June, we said the goal wasn't just to place talented students at great companies. The goal was to send them back out with accelerated AI-building skills they could put on their resumes and use to land jobs after college. More on how it went on the blog - link in comments : )

I am proud to be a part of this diverse team of technologists who want to make a fairer criminal justice system. My team is filled with people who care about the right things, and it makes me happy to be a part of it. Since I've joined the Customer Success team, Caroline Hanson and I have onboarded several public defender agencies, legal aid and non-profit orgs, and even private practice groups. Today we support close to 100 Public Defender agencies in the U.S. Although I don't directly do criminal defense work anymore, I am grateful to support those doing the important work everyday through our platform. 🙂

Excited to share that Duncan Curtis is joining us as SVP of Product and Operations at Patronus AI. Previously, Duncan was Head of Product at Zoox, SVP at Sama, and Product Lead at Google Play. He’s also the one to blame if you lost time playing Fruit Ninja back in the day… Designing LLM post-training data is oddly similar to designing games. A great game has simple rules, but creates a huge space of possible strategies. It has to be challenging without being impossible, and the challenge has to actually reveal skill. You can tell the difference between someone who has memorized a trick and someone who has actually mastered the system. Great agent tasks work the same way. You’re designing a simulation world with rules, tools, and feedback, and you’re testing whether agents can complete tasks through good decision making and NOT reward hacking. As models get better, I think agent task design will increasingly look like game design. The same principles that make games compelling may turn out to be what make RL environments powerful. Couldn’t be more excited to have Duncan on the team.

Last week, our team had the opportunity to spend time in Tennessee with public defenders from across the state. We started the trip by visiting our partners at the Nashville Defenders and The Law Office of the Shelby County Public Defender. We trained attorneys on how they can use our AI tools to draft witness lists, build case timelines, and more. A big thank you to Georgia Sims and Glover Wright for welcoming us and making the visits so meaningful. We ended the trip at the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers annual conference, where we presented on JusticeText and had the chance to connect with members of the private bar. We are grateful to work with the hundreds of Tennessee defenders who work every day to advocate for their clients.

Had the pleasure of attending the AI in Healthcare panel last night. Thanks to the Harvard Business School (HBS) Association of Northern California, Harvard Club of San Francisco, and MIT Club of Northern California for hosting and bringing together some incredible people. Wanted to share some interesting insights and takeaways from the evening. 1) “Healthcare moves at the speed of trust.” Michael Turken, MD, MPH reiterated this when discussing AI adoption in healthcare organizations, and I think it’s a very applicable to both product and model evaluation. How can we gain this trust? And perhaps more importantly, when we have it, how do we ensure it isn’t misused? 2) Max Marchione discussed his vision with Superpower where healthcare baselines become hyper individual instead of general guidelines. Comparing yourself against yourself. I found this really interesting, yet I’m curious how these baselines would work. Current health guidelines come from randomized controlled trials and decades of observational studies. They may not be perfect, but they benefit from the ensemble effect of aggregating diverse outcomes. If n=1, how would you know what a “good” blood pressure for you would be? To know good levels, you would need to know bad levels and these bad thresholds may not always be reached within one individual across all metrics. I might need to educate myself bit more about this. 3) Afsana Akhter brought up something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently: the importance of economic incentives for innovation. Her advice to startups was to focus on revenue, because being able to generate revenue means you’re providing value and are able to scale. This made me wonder, is value creation bidirectional? If revenue shows value creation, does all value creation result in monetary gain? Is our current economic incentive structure aligned with what is good for humanity? Anyways, food for thought. What do you think? Thanks to all the panelists for the great discussion and debate. And it was lovely to meet everybody.
