For institutions, this “back to school” moment is a reminder: while students prepare for another season, leaders must prepare their programs for an entirely new era of college athletics. 1. NCAA Embraces Single January Transfer Portal Window for Football Big news: The NCAA’s Football Oversight Committee has voted to shift to a single 10-day transfer portal window in January, beginning January 2, 2026 — just one day after the College Football Playoff quarterfinals conclude. This change eliminates the spring window. Additionally: • The entire month of December will be a recruiting dead period. • There’s momentum to move the date when offers and NIL benefits can be furnished back from August 1 to November 15 of a recruit’s senior year. • Final approval is expected by October 1. Why it matters: • Condenses transfer activity into a defined window, reducing year-round volatility. • Brings clarity for coaches, athletes, and compliance offices. • Still overlaps with CFP semifinals and finals, adding pressure on playoff contenders. 2. NIL Boost: Commission Clears Over 8,300 Deals Worth Nearly $80 Million The newly formed College Sports Commission (CSC) has approved more than 8,300 NIL deals, totaling nearly $80 million, through its NIL-Go platform launched June 11 under the House v. As someone who builds media brands, I think about this constantly: what’s the difference between giving people a platform and giving them real permission to speak? Raúl isn't new to this. He's spent decades representing Latino culture through El Gordo y la Flaca. He understands live television. Yet when he spoke from personal truth, the transition felt abrupt. Here's what this moment surfaced for me: True representation isn't just visibility; it's the freedom to be authentic when it counts. It's the difference between featuring diverse voices and trusting diverse voices. The audience who felt that interruption? They're telling us something about what authentic media looks like in 2026. As media leaders, our job is to listen and ask: Are we creating space for real voices, or just comfortable ones? The proposed $238M, 12,000-seat stadium at Carroll Park would anchor: • D.C. United’s MLS Next Pro club • A USL Super League women’s team • A second D.C. Ownership groups are increasingly thinking beyond first-team assets. They are building regional ecosystems that include development leagues, women’s professional teams, academies, and real estate.
