Your monitoring system caught the fault in milliseconds. Then someone had to track down the right person, reach them through whatever channel worked, and hope they arrived with enough context to act. That part took 40 minutes, and the machine had nothing to do with it. The handoff did. Nikhil Arora put it plainly at AIMST 2026: Most floors don't have a visibility problem. They have a response problem, and that distinction matters. If your automation is working but your downtime isn't moving, the answer could be in that handoff.

Machine data tells manufacturers when there's downtime. It rarely captures what happened next: who responded, what was said, and what made it to the next shift. Frontline manufacturing workers notice things. A machine that sounds different. A process that's slightly off. A recurring issue that keeps coming back. But if reporting that observation means stopping production, navigating a cumbersome system, or enduring high-friction workflows, it becomes less likely that a worker will report the issue with the timeliness and attention needed. That's not a character flaw. It's a communication failure. And it's one of the most underappreciated safety risks on the factory floor today. Gallup's 2026 State of the Global Workplace report found only 17% of frontline manufacturing employees are engaged. And with engagement low, safety suffers �� not because workers don't care, but because the systems around them make it hard to stay connected.
