Modern enterprises have to manage exponentially-growing exabyte-scale data stores comprised mostly of unstructured data. Someone (often IT) has the difficult job of staying on top of managing these data stores, which becomes more difficult to do as enterprise datasets expand from the data center to the edge and cloud. And while scale and complexity are rising, budgets and staff are not. Existing solutions suffer from two crucial shortcomings: Complexity and platform lock-in. Legacy solutions are excruciatingly complex to deploy and manage.     1,000 small writes go into the file system. Roughly 10 object PUTs come out. Every small write that lands directly on object storage is a transaction you pay for, and at petabyte scale those transactions climb faster than the capacity line item ever does. Legacy cloud file storage compounds it by tying compute to capacity, so teams buy nodes for room they need and performance they already had. Cloud Native Qumulo pulls the two apart. Writes get coalesced and compressed in a mirrored NVMe cache before they ever reach object storage, which cuts object storage API calls by up to 99%. Capacity bills per minute on what you use, and adding performance is a matter of adding nodes.     Ransomware goes after live data first. AKA the one copy your backup schedule can't help you with. Qumulo NeuralProtect reads file content inline as it's written, at 64KB granularity. When it recognizes malicious encryption, three things happen in the same breath. Qumulo takes away the writer's ability to write. Cisco Hypershield pushes a new policy to Cisco Smart Switches and cuts the attacker off from the network as well as the storage. Splunk receives the full threat detail for alerting and incident response. Detection to containment lands in seconds, with a false positive rate under 0.01%. Entropy and metadata watchers infer an attack from its side effects, which is why they need a learning period and why an attacker who deliberately keeps entropy low can walk right past them. NeuralProtect reads the file itself. Building this with the Cisco and Splunk teams has been some of the most satisfying work we've done this year.     Qumulo is in the Innovation Spotlight at Global NEXT Summit 2026 with the Redington Limited team. 📍 Singapore, September 2-4. Yet, all four hit the same wall, where the data outgrew the hardware and the cloud bill made the obvious answer expensive. Here is how each one got out of it without picking a side 👇

    Data access is not usually where a cancer story starts. In this one it sits close to the middle. A clinical trial at ONJCRI enrolled 240 patients across 17 Australian sites, and it generated a wall of data, pushing ONJCRI's research data from 14TB to more than 250TB between the genomic sequencing, scans, treatment records, and immune-response data coming off every patient. Researchers at different hospitals needed all of it without copying files around or waiting on a transfer. One of those patients was a mother of three told to get her affairs in order. Seven years later she lives with cancer as a chronic condition. Thank you, Dr. Martha Boeckenfeld, for telling this story. We're glad to help power work like this.

    A surgeon told her to get her affairs in order. She had months to live. She was a mother of three with stage four gallbladder cancer that had spread to her liver. Rare. Aggressive. Barely studied. That was seven years ago. She is still alive. She joined a clinical trial at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute. In less than a year, her tumours shrank to 5% of their original size. Today, she lives with cancer as a chronic condition. The trial paired two immunotherapy drugs, nivolumab and ipilimumab, for people with rare and advanced cancers. Results from the study helped shape the design of the subsequent MoST-CIRCUIT trial. 240 patients joined across 17 Australian and New Zealand sites. Among 28 patients with rare ovarian or endometrial cancers, 54% had an objective response. In a separate cohort of 52 patients with cancers linked by a particular genetic feature, 63% responded to treatment. For patients with few treatment options, these results offer new hope for rare and aggressive tumours. The trials also created a huge data problem. Each patient generated genomic sequencing files, scans, treatment records and immune-response data. Across the study, ONJCRI's research data grew from 14 terabytes to more than 350 terabytes. Researchers need access to the data without slowing analysis or treatment decisions. Qumulo supports that part. ONJCRI researchers can now access and share genomic files from one unified data platform. That means storage and retrieval doesn’t slow the work down. For patients who run out of options, those delays matter. One 56-year-old father with advanced neuroendocrine cancer entered the trial after his oncologist had nothing else to offer. He responded to the treatment within months. He went back to coaching his daughter's football team. The MoST-CIRCUIT study later helped support an Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme listing for combination immunotherapy in specific rare cancers, giving eligible patients a subsidised treatment option. That chain is easy to miss: A patient enters a trial. Their data moves between researchers. The treatment works. The evidence builds. Other patients gain access. For someone with months left, the speed of the research system is part of the treatment story. Qumulo gives researchers access to the data that can make stories like this possible.     Radiologists lose hundreds of hours a year waiting on large studies to load. David Chou puts the cause underneath the system rather than in the network, and the part that stays with us is what those minutes actually are. Someone is on the table. Someone is waiting for a call. He follows the same thread through data silos, ransomware landing on live files, and the distance between what health systems have promised on AI and what their data can support.
