It’s #FiduciaryFriday! 📊 Michael Smoots, J.D., AIF®, explores why traditional pensions continue to outperform 401(k)s—and whether it’s time to rethink access to private assets in defined contribution plans. #401k #DefinedContribution #DefinedBenefit #PrivateEquity #FiduciaryFriday
Why have traditional pension plans (DB plans) typically outperformed defined contribution plans, like 401k? According to BlackRock's CEO: “Private assets like real estate and infrastructure can lift returns and protect investors during market downturns. Pension funds have invested in these assets for decades, but 401(k)s haven’t. It’s one reason why pensions typically outperform 401(k)s by about 0.5% each year.” The refence to DB plans provides a strong argument in support of allowing defined contribution investors access to private markets, especially when an institutional asset manager is providing that through a "do it for me" investment. This week's article places emphasis on the timing. Yet, long-term investors ought to be able to weather a downturn in PE over a 20- or 30-year investment horizon. And I don't expect target date funds to hold significant PE allocations in their "Income" or 2030 vintages; most money managers are unlikely to take that risk. Stay tuned for the executive order. In the meantime, I have to wonder whether anyone is considering the merits of daily liquidity in defined contribution plans? Would 401k and 403b savers be better served if we kept daily valuation but implemented a quarterly or annual redemption restriction? #401k #DefinedContribution #DefinedBenefit #PrivateEquity #Fiduciary #FiduciaryFriday #FF072525 #FF080125 https://lnkd.in/g7XRf-MR
