Al Williams has seen it all. Throughout her career she has worked as a retailer, solutions architect, technology partner, and now as the VP of Market Strategy at Commerce. That experience gives her a particularly practical lens on AI and commerce. In the latest Voices of Commerce, she gets into product data, changing discovery behavior, trust, and how she decides which market shifts deserve attention. Turns out shoppers don't mind AI in their search bar. They mind bad recommendations. Search has quickly evolved as search moves from looking for a "blue dress" to searching for "I need something for an outdoor wedding in Nashville, humid weather, packs flat, under $200." We dug into what's changing and where brands are getting it wrong: https://bit.ly/4go2rZr

Thanks to InternetRetailing for publishing my article about the recent growth of in-store BNPL at brands like lululemon 🛍️ Payments is a strategic part of the customer journey, and adding more choices at the cash register is a natural evolution for retailers. With 70% of UK retail sales still taking place in-store, adding more payment flexibility is key to maintaining that dominance by attracting younger, ecommerce-native shoppers into physical stores. Is the government using the retail sector as a political lightning rod? Recent announcements cracking down on ‘subscription traps’ and supermarket discounts sound great on paper. But for a low-margin industry already absorbing soaring energy bills, higher employer National Insurance and rising minimum wages, these measures look more like PR quick-wins than meaningful economic reform. Targeting retailers won't fix structural cost-of-living issues. Without genuine support such as business rates relief the high street faces a wave of insolvencies that will ultimately leave consumers with fewer choices and higher prices. Also in today’s newsletter: • Retail vs. Regulation: Why political point-scoring won't save the high street. • In-Store BNPL: Michaela Weber explores what lululemon introducing Klarna to physical tills means for the future of payments. • Brand Spotlight: The fascinating story behind Swatch's global rise. • Impact: How Lidl GB is stepping up to help tackle food poverty. Welcome to platform group therapy. Travis Hess and Brent W Peterson revisit some of commerce's longest-running debates: open vs. closed platforms, merchant freedom, customer ownership, and whether we're building smarter systems or just more complicated ones. There are a few unpopular opinions. And at least one prediction about the tech debt we're creating right now. 🎧 Tune in → https://lnkd.in/gpcvgf9N #KeepingCommerceWeird
