Jeanne joined Fenstermaker in 2006 as a student intern while pursuing her graduate degree at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Across her career, she has seen firsthand how Fenstermaker’s capabilities work in concert to solve complex challenges—and how much more is possible when those disciplines are fully integrated. The design is what gets built. The data is where the work begins. Across the Mermentau Basin, surveyed elevations, water levels, flow patterns, and tidal influence help engineers understand a system that extends far beyond any single channel or structure. For the Mermentau Basin Inundation Relief Project, that information helped Fenstermaker’s coastal engineering team evaluate how water moves through the basin—and how a proposed improvement in one location could influence conditions elsewhere. Field observations. Survey data. Hydraulic modeling. Each adds another layer of understanding. In this field conversation, Daniel Dehon, P.E., explains how that information moves through the engineering process—from understanding existing conditions to developing practical designs that can be constructed in the field. Treat every line like it’s a live line. On an active construction site, that mindset can save a life. Along Petroleum Parkway, where Fenstermaker is supporting a total roadway reconstruction for St. Martin Parish Government, crews are working within an active utility corridor—including around a high-pressure gas pipeline crossing the roadway. In this field conversation, Civil Engineer Josh Laborde, P.E., and Construction Inspector Aaron Hungerford discuss one of the most critical—and sometimes unpredictable—elements of roadway construction: utility conflicts. Coordination begins long before crews break ground, but even with careful design and planning, field conditions do not always match what is expected. An unmarked line. A utility that isn’t where records say it should be. When that happens: stop work, verify, and never assume. As Aaron puts it, rushing the job is never worth the risk: “I treat every line like it’s a live line.” It’s a simple principle with serious implications. Every design decision, construction schedule, and infrastructure investment carries a responsibility to protect the people doing the work. From the marshes of SWLA to NYC for the Meta Wearables Community Summit Fenstermaker Remote Sensing Scientist Coy LeBlanc, M.S., GISP, PWS recently joined developers, researchers, innovators, and fellow AI Glasses Impact Grant recipients for three days of conversation centered on an important question: What can AI-enabled glasses make possible when placed in the hands of people who deeply understand the problems they are working to solve? For Coy, that question leads directly back to the coast. Growing up in a South Louisiana coastal community shaped both his connection to these environments and his determination to find better ways to understand them. Today, that perspective informs his work developing environmental data-collection tools for scientists and field professionals working in demanding conditions. “The ability to build tools that provide real-time information and capabilities in a truly hands-free environment is a game changer,” Coy said. “Technology like this has the potential to transform how we collect data, make decisions, and operate safely in the field.” Through Fenstermaker’s AI Glasses Impact Grant project, Coy is collaborating with the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence at UL Lafayette to explore applications that can help identify and document bird species, counts, behaviors, locations, and other environmental observations in real time. The technology is emerging. The coastal expertise behind its application has been built over decades. What makes this opportunity so compelling is the chance to apply new technology to a landscape we know deeply—and to the real challenges our field teams encounter there every day. Ten years later, the August 2016 Flood still shapes how Livingston Parish prepares for flood risk. The memories are deeply personal. Families left home with what they could carry. Boats moved through streets where cars had been inundated and submerged. At the water’s edge, neighbors turned toward the flood to help bring others to higher ground. Remembrance also carries responsibility. Today, Livingston Parish is developing its first parishwide Drainage Master Plan—not to react to one problem at a time, but to better understand the system as a whole and establish a roadmap for the investments that follow. That work begins with understanding what exists on the ground. As part of the larger project team, Fenstermaker’s Survey & Geospatial professionals visited more than 200 drainage structures across Livingston Parish, collecting survey data, dimensions, photographs, and existing-condition information. Those observations help build the infrastructure inventory and ground the model in the drainage system that actually exists. The model may be digital. The reality behind it is measured in the field. That field data supports the broader engineering and modeling effort underway with Livingston Parish, Halff, and project partners—helping the team evaluate drainage as a connected system and make future recommendations from evidence rather than reaction. We cannot change what happened in August 2016. What we can do is carry its lessons forward in the work being done now. The goal is larger than a model or a report. It is about doing the work today so future generations can keep calling Livingston Parish home—continuing to learn, adapt, and prepare for whatever the future holds. In Iberia Parish, a new water treatment facility is helping deliver the reliable water supply needed to support First Solar’s manufacturing operations. But what actually happens inside the plant? Fenstermaker Engineer Colten Dore, P.E., takes us inside the filtration process, where groundwater moves through five open-air filters designed to remove naturally occurring iron, manganese, and other impurities before the finished water moves into storage.
