There's a moment in every mission planning cycle when the conversation shifts from what we intend to accomplish to how we keep accomplishing it when conditions turn against us. As an engineer, I've always appreciated the logic of PACE — Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency — the framework special operations forces use to build resilience into communications. What I've come to realize is that PACE isn't just about comms—it's a design philosophy, even more pertinent with the proliferation of AI. AI hasn't changed the mission — defense has always operated under friction and opposition. What's changed is the speed, scale, and autonomy of the systems we now depend on.
