Contract: Devil by the Well is a Side Quest in The Witcher 3 that takes the form of a Witcher Contract. Set in the area of White Orchard, this contract can be considered your very first monster contract as you'll be tasked with defeating a Noonwraith.

Contract: Devil by the Well Walkthrough

In the main town in White Orchard, you can find the contract on the notice board. Grab the contract and set your mission marker for “Devil by the Well.”

Go talk to the man that issued the contract, Odolan. He can be found in his house on the west side of town. There is a a haunted well in the abandoned town nearby. Why abandoned? Because a scary ghost is haunting the well. Hear about the beast, and strike a deal. Hear you can haggle for a better price. The initial offer is for 20 crowns, you may attempt to raise the reward as high as 27.

With a deal struck, make your way to the abandoned town marked on your map. Try going there around noon to spot the ghost in person. You can meditate to speed up the clock. Turns out that it is a Noonwraith haunting the well. To send the Noonwraith on its way, you have to find what ties it to this place. Three houses light up on the map for you to search. Go in the house on the left. Inside, use your Witcher Sense to find the remains of a corpse, a yellowed diary, and bloody drag markings on the floor. Read the yellowed diary to find out why the Noonwraith is sticking around.

The diary tells you about a bracelet, which is what ties the Noonwraith to this location. If you approach the well while the Noonwraith is present, the ghost will attack. Instead, back off, meditate til the morning and then approach the well.

Investigate the well to find a corpse hanging in the well. It seems to be the body of our Noonwraith. Jump into the well and dive to find the bracelet at the bottom. With the bracelet in hand, climb on a ledge in the well and walk to another part of the cave. From there, swim underwater to leave. You’ll pop out near the abandoned village. Head back to the well to summon the Noonwraith.

Before burning the corpse and bracelet, select the Yrden sign to make the fight easier. They are also weak to Moon Dust bombs and Specter oil, if you have any. Burn the corpse and begin the fight.

How to Defeat Noonwraith

The Yrden sign is essential in killing this beast. Throw it down and lure the Noonwraith into the circle. The magic gives the monster a physical form that you can hit. She may blind you with a blast. It won’t blind you for too long. Another trick of hers is to spawn clones. Hit them to find the real Noonwraith. Keep using the Yrden sign and soon the beast will fall.

With the Noonwraith gone, go back to Odolan for your reward. He will either give you the agreed upon amount or, if you refuse the coin, he will give you Amethyst. He mentions that the local herbalist, Tomira, may know the victims from the abandoned town. She lives close by. Go visit her for more insight on the victims and more rewards!
