Alchemy

This page contains information on Alchemy in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Alchemy is the process of converting substances into other materials, and vice versa. In The Witcher, alchemy is used to craft Potions, Oils, Bombs and other useful items that Geralt can use to enhance his efficiency in combat.

Alchemy Substances

Alchemy Substances are items found throughout the world which can be used to create powerful potions and decoctions

The ingredients needed for each are clearly marked in your Alchemy menu in the game. However, the recipes themselves have to be discovered first.

Alchemy Recipes

  • Potion and Decoction recipe locations: check the Potions Section
  • For Mutagens needed for Decoctions: check the Mutagen Locations Section
  • For hard-to-find ingredients: check the Alchemy Locations Sections

Alcohol

Pure alcohol differs from the consumable versions you find in that they are often used as a base for many of the Witcher's decoctions, potions, and even bombs. As an added benefit, once you have made any such concoctions, meditating will use any pure alcohol you have to replenish any used potions.

Dwarven Spirit 1 x Empty Bottle, 2 x Mahakaman Spirit, 1 x White Myrtle Petals Used in creating potions
White Gull 1 x Empty Bottle, 1 x Redanian Herbal, 1x Cherry Cordial, 1 x Mandrake Cordial, 1 x Arenaria Key ingredient in potions

Bombs

Bombs that can be crafted are usually small in quantity, but large in effect. They can be tossed either by manually aiming by holding down the appropriate button, or tossed automatically when locked on to a target. Once made, bombs can be replenished by meditating, and having pure alcohol in your inventory.

Decoctions

Decoctions are special and potent potions that use a monster's inherit mutagens to give Geralt some of their powers, if only for a time. These decoctions are often hard to brew, and require you to kill the monster you wish to borrow powers from. Their effects vary wildly, and are usually incredibly toxic

Oils

A Witcher can coat his blade in oils that can further damage a monster - if the Witcher knows which oil is best for the task. Once made, an oil can be applied any time, and will last for several hits. During this time, all strikes against the right target will deal additional damage.

Potions

A Witcher can make use of powerful potions that would be lethal to a normal human. These specialty potions can do everything from granting night vision, increased regenerative capabilities, and more. Once a potion is crafted, it can be replenished at any time by meditating with enough pure alcohol in your inventory.

Quests

The following potions are used in missions and have to be brewed to complete them.

  • Chort Lure: 1 x Fiend Dung, 2 x Crow's Eye
  • The Decoctions of the Grasses: 1 x Forktail Spinal Fluid, 1 x Manticore Poison Gland, 1 x Albino Bruxa Tongue, 1 x Bryonia, 1 x Ribleaf, 1 x Mandrake Root
