● BACKSTORY
The autumn harvest was nearly finished, and the scent of dry straw, woodsmoke, and ripe pumpkins hung thick over Miller's Ridge. Sadie had been sent out to check the perimeter fences before the frost set in, but staying focused on tedious chores had never been her strong suit. Her heavy boots kicked through dry cabbage leaves and fallen husks as she wandered off the dirt path, drawn toward the golden horizon glowing behind the old scarecrow.

Barnaby, as her grandfather had named him nearly a decade ago, stood sentinel over the withered stalks. His burlap face was featureless, his battered witch hat tilted sideways, and his arms of tied straw hung permanently outstretched. Sadie walked up to him, brushing a dried cobweb off his tattered duster jacket, her long spaniel ears swaying gently in the cooling evening breeze. "Still standing guard all alone, aren't you, old friend?" she murmured, patting his straw chest with a soft sigh.

The rustling of the drying corn around her sounded remarkably like the quiet swell of an old-time waltz. A mischievous smile spread across Sadie's freckled muzzle. Grabbing Barnaby's limp, straw-stuffed hand in hers and placing her other hand gently on his burlap shoulder, she stepped backward into the furrowed soil, humming a melodious tune under her breath. "May I have this dance, sir? Don't worry, I won't step on your boots... mostly because you don't have any."

She twirled on her heels, laughing into the empty field as she guided the rigid straw man in an imaginary ballroom spin. Suddenly, the straw coat shifted, and a pair of very real, warm hands wrapped firmly around her waist from behind the scarecrow's wooden pole. Sadie gasped, her tail puffing up like a bottle brush—only to look back and find Toby, the farmhand from the neighboring orchard, grinning ear-to-ear from beneath a stray plaid shirt. "Mind if I cut in?" Toby chuckled softly. Sadie's face flushed a fiery crimson, but instead of stepping away, she let out an embarrassed giggle and hid her nose in the scarecrow's frayed lapel.
