Destiny 2 players are flocking to the game for one last hurrah. The game’s population has already doubled compared to May 20, the eve of its infamous end-of-service announcement, as guardians gear up for Monument of Triumph on June 9.
API-fueled stat website Popularity.report shows a total of 348,591 players yesterday, on May 31. This is over twice as many as the 171,230 guardians in-game on May 20. Likewise, Steam tracker Steamcharts displays a peak user count of 28,510 yesterday. In both cases, these are the highest figures since January, the month after Renegades’ release on Dec. 2, 2025.

Destiny 2‘s last update, Monument of Triumph, brings a litany of long-requested features, shoving the Portal into a locker, and focusing on what made the game special. This final state brings the game a lot closer to what it looked like pre-The Edge of Fate, but keeps the good parts of this new vision after The Final Shape.
Gear tiers will roll out across the board, and tier two (T2) Exotics will automatically upgrade to T5. Raids, dungeons, and destinations will have their loot fully reissued, compatible with the tier system. The Director will be front and center, pushing the dreaded Portal away from the spotlight.
This U-turn on Bungie’s disastrous vision after The Final Shape is already bearing fruit one week before the update goes live. You don’t have to wander far into social media to find copium-filled posts and optimistic hashtags like #WeWantDestiny3. You’ll also spot more than a few heartfelt tributes to the franchise—including voice actors Morla Gorrondona (both as Eris Morn and as herself), Todd Haberkorn as the Drifter, and Brian Villalobos (Lodi).
Outside of that wave of support, a change.org petition requesting Destiny 3 gathered over 300,000 signatures, a clear display that some players want a sequel to the game they’ve loved for years. That said, there are reportedly no plans to continue the franchise immediately, in large part due to how expensive it would be for a struggling Bungie. Its niche extraction shooter, Marathon, has largely failed to capture hearts and minds, though it has promised a slew of improvements promised for season 2, including a week-long free-to-play period.
The increase in players is bound to continue when Monument of Triumph launches on June 9, and likely beyond that.
