Following the US Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which eliminated a constitutional right to abortion nationwide, 21 US states have banned or limited access to the procedure. Eighteen of those states have either enacted complete bans or have banned access to the procedure within six weeks of pregnancy — before many people know they are pregnant.
States where abortion is limited report higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, as well as greater economic insecurity.
Most recently in Wyoming, the governor signed a “fetal heartbeat” abortion ban into law. This comes two months after the Wyoming Supreme Court struck down the two of the state’s bans that were enacted in 2023 — including a first-of-its-kind ban on abortion pills — and sided with the state’s only abortion clinic.
CNN is tracking these legal challenges as they make their way through the courts. Here’s where abortion access currently stands in the United States.
