ASUS introduced the latest in its Republic of Gamers (ROG) portfolio — Zephyrus G16, a gaming laptop packed with power, performance and lightness. This sleek device is perfect for both gamers and workers. It uses a strong AMD Ryzen chip and NVIDIA graphics card — helping with new games and heavy workloads. Surprisingly — or perhaps not, giving the general direction of gaming laptops these days — it is light enough to put in a backpack.
A new era for gaming laptops
The Zephyrus G16 changes ideas about gaming laptops. It looks like an ultrabook instead of a typical gaming machine. It weighs just 1.85 kg and is only 1.49 cm thick. This new design is much lighter than older models. It is the best buddy for gamers who travel. A light strip on the lid gives it a stylish look. Yet, it is not too flashy. This simple style fits both work and play scenarios.
Impressive build and design
ASUS used grey metal for the G16's body. It looks very nice and feels strong. The sleek shape is easy to carry. It fits well whether attending a friend's game night or a work meeting.
The light strip is a nod to the RGB lighting that is pervasive in gaming machines. However, it has a more grown-up vibe than other models. It really appealed to my sombre sensibilities.
Keyboard and touchpad experience
The G16's keyboard is extremely impressive. It offers good feedback thanks to its 1.7 mm key travel. The keys are not noisy, perfect for gaming and typing. Users can also personalise the key lighting. The touchpad is excellent, too. Its glass surface feels smooth, and it is 47% bigger than before. This size makes it enjoyable for everyone, even those who usually use a mouse.
Connectivity options
Though slim, the Zephyrus G16 has many connectivity features. On its left side are a fast USB 4 port, a regular USB port, an HDMI port and a headphone jack. The right side holds another USB-C port, a different USB port and an SD card slot. The latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 tech offer future-proofed, quick and reliable wireless links for play and work.
Display quality
The display could decide a laptop's fate, and ASUS shines here with the G16. A 16-inch screen shows sharp 2560 x 1600 visuals. Its taller shape gives extra space for multitasking. A refresh rate of 240Hz and 3 ms response time suit fast gaming. It is perfect for avoiding blur. The colours are very bright and precise, covering all of DCI-P3's range — they are Pantone-certified, ideal for photo and video edits. The IPS screen may not reach OLED blacks but still offers great views. Brightness levels hit 500 nits, which is very helpful for bright settings or HDR fun.
Audio and webcam features
The G16's sound quality surprised me with its six-speaker setup. Two handle high sounds while four manage lows. The sound is clear and has good bass. Watching videos or gaming feels complete even without outside speakers. It also uses Dolby Atmos for a better sound experience. In terms of video talking and streaming, the laptop includes a top-grade microphone. AI cuts background noise for clearer chats. Its 1080p webcam outshines rivals, giving sharp video calls. Also, it supports Windows Hello for fast, safe facial logins.
Power and performance
The G16 features an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 chip with 12 cores and 24 threads. It achieves speeds up to 5.1GHz. This powerful engine suits gaming and tough tasks like video edits and 3D making. My review unit came with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card, 16GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. The G16 smoothly runs most new games on high settings.
It is a gaming laptop, after all, and that is exactly where is stands head and shoulders above all others. I tested a mixture of newly-released as well as older but resource-intensive titles — Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War (2018), Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard — and the G16 barely broke a sweat.
