The literal translation would be “gas factory”, but it doesn’t have the same connation in English as in French. 🙂 A Rube Goldberg machine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg_machine) might be what you’re looking for as a cultural reference here. (And, as a bonus, they’re super fun to watch.)
Interestingly, my experience talking to users has indicated that more advanced users (or at least, users who have a better understanding of the underlying technical structure of websites, or who have been using WordPress for a long time) derive the least value from Gutenberg, whereas beginners tend to really appreciate the ability to arrange their page in a more visual way.
Can you elaborate more on your experience? This dichotomy is something we haven’t quite solved just yet, so it’s always helpful to have more data to work with.
