y'all know that whole left-brained/right-brained thing is fake right? and the "brain fully develops at age 25" thing? and the "we only use 10% of our brains" thing? yeah they're all complete horseshit please yell at anyone who says them
okay people are doing nuance in the notes about the kernels of truth in neuroscience myths but I really really need you to understand that that is not important here. people don't believe there are "right-brained" and "left-brained" people because they've misunderstood lateralisation of the central nervous system, they believe it because that binary framework was deliberately pushed by people who wanted to define who was logical enough to lead, and surprise surprise, white adult heterosexual men are left-brained. people don't believe the brain "finishes developing at 25" because they've misunderstood life stage differences in neuroplasticity, they believe it because the idea that children, teens, and young adults have inferior brains is a convenient rationalisation for a society that marginalises them. people don't believe you "only use 10% of your brain" because they misread an fMRI study, they believe it because it's useful bullshit for everyone from hyperindividualist historical revisionists pushing the great genius concept of scientific progress to hucksters recruiting for cults that will teach you to unlock your latent telekinesis for just $5000 a month. that's why it's fucking important to know that many popular science ideas are false and to push back on them loudly and frequently, because they're not just mildly incorrect, they are often active components of systems of violence.
There’s also a thing that people who think they’re being accepting do where they go “Not wanting romance is SO SAD AND LONELY! Not wanting to read romance novels is SEXIST! Not wanting a partner makes you a FREAK! Not having sex with your partner is BAD and ABUSIVE! Not feeling sexual attraction to your partner means there is SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU!… unless you’re aromantic or asexual, of course! Then you get a pass.” The only acceptable reason to deviate from the amatonormative and sexnormative societal norm is to claim an identity label that exempts you. The actual thing you’re doing is still bad… but don’t worry it’s OK for you to do it! It feels like, we haven’t actually challenged any norms at all, you just get a pass on them because you can’t help it, poor thing. If you have the capacity to feel these, you have the obligation to; you are only exempt if you claim an identity that says that you are unable to. It implies that we would if we could, but we can’t, and it’s merely unfair to punish us for our shortcomings. Romance and sex are still social requirements, that hasn’t changed, we just are allowed a pass on it because we are unable to meet them. (And we’re still expected to reassure everyone that of course we recognize that their romance and sex is far more important than anything we will ever be able to have!)
I don’t want aros and aces to get special exemption from the requirement to have romance and sex and romantic attraction and sexual attraction; I want that to not be a requirement for anyone.
I would dearly love for more people to be capable of differentiating between public risk and personal risk.
Examples: drinking is a personal risk. Drinking and driving is a public risk. Going scuba diving is a personal risk. Running a scuba shop with faulty equipment is a public risk. Riding a bicycle without a helmet is a personal risk. Not maintaining public transport safety standards is a public risk. Foraging for mushrooms is a personal risk. Advertising a mushroom identification app that uses shoddy AI is a public risk. Elective surgery is a personal risk. Not wearing a mask in a doctor's waiting room when you are sick with a contagious illness is a public risk.
I could go on just about forever here. But it's a really important distinction and it drives me nuts when they get conflated, and it's so common.
Transmascs: Hey, we face a lot of problems including suicide, erasure, assault, torture, forced pregnancy, and murder. Can we talk about this?
People on the internet for some reason: You are so selfish and hate trans women. Die.
Reminder that people with invisible disabilities aren't the only ones who get ignored and accused of lying by doctors. People with visible and severe, even deadly disabilities aren't automatically believed. Some severely and visibly disabled people die because doctors won't believe that they're really sick, accuse them of faking or exaggerating and deny them treatment. This kind of treatment isn't unique to any one kind of disability, it's something that most or perhaps even all of us have faced at one point or another.
For about ten years I had neurologists look at my brain scans and lie to my face (and the face of my parents when I was a minor) that it was nothing serious and that I was imagining all of my symptoms, despite having visible hemiplegia. All but the occipital lobe on the right side of my brain is either missing mass or significantly scarred (gliosis). No matter how visibly disabled you are doctors lie, they ignore, they dismiss. Nothing will protect you from the ableism ingrained into the medical system, and it kills so many people.
Every time tho someone brings up "trans men have no good music. They just suck at music. Idk what to tell you trans men just don't make good art." The only purpose is to be cruel and people eat it up every time. Like there's no other point than to be cruel and find a way to be a dickhead to trans men while hiding behind "well it's just true! It's my opinion that you guys suck and are creatively useless to me. Trans men as a group are just untalented." OK if I said this about trans women you'd call me a bigot, right? Do we see the issue?
Also there's quite a bit of historical significance to the idea that a marginalized group makes "bad art", shouldn't ignore that. 🧍🏻‍♂️
watching y’all shamelessly send transmascs and trans men death and rape threats for daring to talk about their oppression is fucking wild btw. There’s a transmasc confessions account that got so many fucking death/rape threats that one mod had to leave tumblr for a while and the other had to make a post being like “hey uhm so we’re both minors. Y’all have been telling teens to kill themselves. Hope you feel good about yourselves!”
Genuinely what the fuck is wrong with you people.
this was the first post i ever made about transandrophobia, after i rejoined tumblr after a longggggg hiatus. i saw a bunch of people being transandrophobic and i wanted to call it out. note how it does not mention transfems at all? this post was mostly in reference to rittz/fite-club who is a transmasc himself. these are some of the messages i received because of this post and a follow up ask i sent to another blog that then had to be removed bc i was receiving so much abuse FROM OTHER TRANS PEOPLE (and terfs but quite a few trans people identify as terfs now so...... jfc shoot me)
these are the only ones i feel comfortable showing because the rest are extremely graphic, describing how these people would sexually assault and murder me. this cannot be allowed to continue, and if you arent actively calling out people like this in your community then you are part of the problem
Someone I follow is watching the anime Catch Me at the Ballpark, and every time they post I’m assaulted by The Song
I understand some of you are 19 but that is not an old man, he's 32.
okay i’m out the shower and I have more thoughts about black mirror (s7, watch for spoilers)
