Cope. 1905 by News Syndicate Co Keating's Jail Term Muni, Kim Stanley Win Variety Poll By CHARLES McHARRY Paul Muni and Kim Stanley emerged yesterday with the best-actor actress titles in Variety's 14th Verdon were named tops for. their performances in musicals.

Muni, star of "Inherit the Wind," was voted best by 10 of the 16 first-nighters taking part in the balloting. Miss Stanley, of "Bus Stop," also was a easy winner, receiving 8 of the 16 votes cast. Slezak Barely Wins Slezak, co-star of "Fanny," barely beat out Don Ameche, of "Silk Stockings," receiving nods to Ameche's 4. Miss Verdon, star of "Damn Yankee," was an outstanding choice, receiving 81 votes. (Critic John Chapman of THE NEWS, picked Muni, Miss Stanley, Ezio Pinza and Miss Verdon for top honors.) Ed Begley, featured in "Inherit the Wind," was named as top supporting actor of the season.

Patricia Jessel, of "Witness for the Prosecution," and Elaine Stritch, of "Bus Stop," tied for best supporting actresses. George Gizzard, of "Desperate Hours," and Buddy Hackett, of "Lunatics and Lovers," tied for most promising actor with two votes each. A three-way tie resulted in the choice of most promising actress, with two ballots each going to Heller Halliday of "Peter Pan," Loretta Leversee of "Home Is the Hero," and Julie Andrews of "Boy Friend." Shumlin Voted Best Herman Shumlin, of "Inherit the Wind," narrowly beat out Harold Clurman, of "Bus Stop," for the title of best director. Peter Larkin and Oliver Messel received seven votes each for the scene designs in "Inherit the Wind," and "House of Flowers," respectively. Harold Arlen was named best composer for his "House of Flowers" score.

Richard Adler and Jerry Ross were easy winners for their "Damn Yankees" lyrics, and the honors for most promisD. ing playwright went to Jerome Lawrence Robert E. Lee for "Inherit the Wind." Keating broke the story of the raid on Feb. 17, a week after it was staged, compelling police to reverse denials that there had been a raid and touching off Congressional and state legislative investigations of wiretapping. Further Plea Waived Subsequently, Keating was convicted of contempt for refusing to reveal his source to the grand jury. The conviction was upheld Tuesday by the Appellate Division and Keating waived a further plea to the Court of Appeals.

While arrangements were being made for Keating's surrender, a national committee was organized to honor him for safeguarding sources. The committee dedicated to the proposition that Keating was right" when he refused to name his informant-is headed by Croswell Bowen, a magazine writer, and includes Mrs. Julius Ochs Adler, who resigned from the Anti-Crime Committee because it wouldn't back Keating. Editors on Committee Other committee members are the heads of citizen crime commissions throughout the country, editors, lawyers, newspapermen and former colleagues of Keating when he was in the district attorney's office before he joined the Anti-Crime Committee. The national committee credited Keating with being "instrumental in bringing to public light the waterfront crimes, the trotting track scandals, the wiretap abuses and a number of other irregularities which otherwise might have been unknown or untouched by responsible public agencies." Roxy to Have 'Lady, Tramp' Walt Disney's "Lady and the Tramp," the first feature-length cartoon to be produced in CinemaScope and Technicolor, opens at the Roxy June 23.

Hess Comedy in Strawhat Trial; Ice Star Signed With Neva Patterson in the only feminine role and John Cromwell directing, "The Better Mousetrap." a comedy by John Hess, will be tried out at the Bucks County Playhouse, New Hope, week after next.
