'Lady Tramp' a Disney By DOROTHY MASTERS WALT DISNEY has dipped into his magic paint box for another great work of art, a masterpiece not only by virtue of unerring brush and magnificent color, but because the cartoon genius has now perfected his art to the point of making two-dimentional animals more human than real people. It will be universally conceded, I'm sure, that the feminine star of "Lady and the Tramp" rates an Oscar for the best performance of the year. Working for the first time with the broad canvas of CinemaScope, Disney has created an entrancing panorama for the vicissitudes of life and love as cies. experienced His by the canine speprotagonists, cleverly assorted and expertly appraised as to character, provide excellent entertainment for all ages. And WHAT a Cocker! One of the co-stars is Lady, pedigreed cocker spaniel whose troubles begin when a baby arrives to take precedence in the hearts of Darling and Jim Dear, two of the briefly-glimpsed humans sketched in by Disney.
Lady is just getting adjusted to the new regime when 8 gross miscarriage of justice occurs. She's chastized for crimes committed by visiting Siamese cats of haughty mien and deplorable manners. Unlike Lady, who is encouraged in mute eloquence with numerous closeups of extremely mobile features, the characterization of Tramp is largely a matter of dialogue. As the fancy-free mongrel explains his philosophy of life, it's far better to mooch from several friendly families around town than to be owned by any. He doesn't reveal, although the information is eventually relayed to Lady by gossip tongues, that he also has quite a reputation with the ladies.
Comedy and near-tragedy- are in store. Foibles are deftly balanced with feats of gallantry and heroism; heartache threatens the happiness of security and romance. And such a romance! It burgeons at dusk in an alleyway suddenly become enchanted through the ebullience of a congenial matchmaker who joyously proffers soft lights, sweet music and a plate of spaghetti to be shared. The night becomes a lover's paradise. And Then Comes Trouble Comes morning, comes trouble.
Encouraged by her suitor to live it up and "start making memories," Lady essays a prank and winds up in the pound, where she meets a jaded Pekingese who once was a show-girl, a Russian wolfhound who quotes from the classics, a lazying exican chihuahua with a wry sense of humor. But that's enough from meenough to get you started, hope, to the Roxy, where the film speaks very much for itself.
