Red Dead Redemption was a great game when it came out in 2010, and this proves it’s still a great game in 2023. While some classics from previous generations feel dated, that’s certainly not the case here – and if you missed it (or weren’t around for it) thirteen years ago, now’s the time to finally play it. And if you did play it? Maybe it’s time to play it again.
If you’ve already played or own Red Dead Redemption on Xbox Series X or Xbox One X, I only really recommend it on Switch for portable play. If you’ve never played it before and own a Switch, I love this release. The lack of gyro aiming is disappointing, but everything else is better than I expected given this is Red Dead Redemption‘s first ever re-release. Hopefully gyro can be added in so that this becomes my favorite way to experience Red Dead Redemption until a potential PC version releases.
Super Port. Endlich kann ich Teil 1 nachholen mit Undead Nightmare geniales Paket. Der Preis ist gerechtfertigt. Keine Ahnung warum es so eine schlechte User-Bewertung gibt. Unverständlich.
It's always funny to me how people will review bomb something they aren't being forced to buy. I was skeptical about this too. $50 for a 15 year old game that's a straight port.
Well, there's a lot to be said about ports and this one is really good. I almost finished RDR all those years ago and playing it in my hand with crisp 720p visuals. mind-blowing foliage draw distance and impeccable lighting. The effectively shoved a game not meant for handheld with all the graphics. I see sharp shadows and clean lines with some of the best LOD rendering and they had to port this over to Switch. Which, let's face it, is probably 15 year old hardware.
It's an amazing feat and it looks incredible. I've spent $50 on things and had regret but not this. I'm going to finish it this time and enjoy every detail. If you're a fan of the game and want to play it everywhere, then feel free to splurge. It's a worthy purchase even without multi-player modes.
Any gamer 15+ will have an utter ball and I do thoroughly recommend this title. There is nothing quite like it on the Switch and it is so massive and so well thought out you’ll be playing it for ages. The main title is so huge that Undead Nightmare was fun but just a small blip on this amazing games radar.
Red Dead Redemption on Switch is a mostly fine port of a great game. If you’ve been dying to replay it or haven’t checked it out before, you should absolutely do so, but those who have already fully explored the old west won’t find anything new here or much reason to buy it again outside of the handheld factor. For some, though, that will be all the incentive they need.
Red Dead Redemption is really enjoyable on PS4 and Nintendo Switch. After thirteen years, the Rockstar classic holds up like no other, and these adjustments are more than enough for a very satisfying experience. Many of us would have liked something more, but for both nostalgic and new fans of the saga, this port is a fantastic opportunity to get into the boots of John Marston.
Rockstar’s port of Red Dead Redemption on the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch provides an opportunity for both newcomers and fans alike to experience one of gaming’s most memorable adventures once again. While there are some improvements to the visuals and performance, remnants of the game’s age still bleed through. If you can look past the outrageous price tag and some cut content, then your journey back to the Wild West is definitely one worth taking.
If you were hoping for a more robust re-release, sadly, this isn’t that. It’s hard to tell if Rockstar will ever put in the time and money needed to do justice to a Red Dead re-release. But even if they don’t, at least we now have the original classic playable on all modern consoles.

Good-
An incredible open world, full of intermeshing systems, dynamic events, and a whole lot of great content that remains as compelling now as it was at launch; great story that remains one of the best in gaming canon; glitches in Undead Nightmare have been cleaned up; looks especially great in handheld mode.
Bad-
The game has literally been ported as is with few to no enhancements; multiplayer mode has been cut out; controls, mission design, and combat have aged poorly.
Thoughts-
I think, on a broader level, it is fair to expect Rockstar to do more, and to wish that a game as important and beloved as Red Dead Redemption was being treated better. But taking this release for what it is – a straight port of a beloved classic to the Switch – it holds up well, and is worth revisiting, worth recommending. If you have never played Red Dead Redemption before, or the idea of revisiting it on a portable appeals to you? This port comes hugely recommended. But if you were hoping for a more robust re-release, sadly, this isn’t that. It’s hard to tell if Rockstar will ever put in the time and money needed to do justice to a Red Dead re-release. But even if they don’t, at least we now have the original classic playable on all modern consoles.
Game 9/10, Port/Effort 2/10, Price 1/10. Average: 4. Rockstar's devs are basically lazy **** that want our money for no effort whatsoever. If it was either half the price or indeed remastered, then it would be perfect. This title costs more than RDR2 on PC. Where's the logic?
A good idea, badly raised with an exorbitant price.
After the disaster with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, Rockstar Games had the opportunity to shake off those past criticisms with a proper port for Red Dead Redemption (even though it won't be a remaster).
A title that doesn’t exceed 30FPS on PlayStation 5 leaves much to be desired, however, those who benefit most from this port are Nintendo Switch users. We aren’t talking about the forgotten PC users...
Finally, the high price of the port is unjustified, no matter how you look at it, a proper price would have been $29.99 and not the $49.99 it costs. It is not advisable to pay this amount if the title has already been played before.
