In Glasgow, Scotland, training has been developed alongside people bereaved by suicide to raise awareness & confidence in taking to & supporting those affected. It’s called Wave After Wave. It’s fantastic.

Decentralization is key to lasting community #postvention. Frequent community based training for diverse helpers — clergy/lay, clinicians/peers, students/teachers, inmates/officers, preschools/senior centers, etc.
Engage community members in real convos about hope, healing & belonging. Our Zero Suicide team collaborated w-traditional practitioners (AI/AN) to create a monthly Talking Circle/Support Group for Suicide Loss Survivors - culturally tailored postvention efforts are so impactful!
With all respect, I disagree with this claim. 2 out of 3 of my friends who died by suicide were significantly abused and neglected by their families. Including leaving them homeless. There was fault. #AcesTooHigh#SuicidePrevention#SuicideLoss
A1. In Northern Ireland research I carried out showed around 50% of next of kin considered taking their own lives & next of kin estimated around 70 people on average, were significantly impacted by a death by suicide. http://niassembly.gov.uk/globalassets/documents/raise/knowledge_exchange/briefing_papers/series4/kess-suicide-bereavement-mallon-and-galway.pdf…
A3- I think of active #postvention as real community support and community building that creates safe communities and supportive systems instead of reactionary supports and systems. #elevatetheconvo
A2 when we asked next of kin why they did not seek support (4/10 didn’t), some said they didn’t feel they deserved help. Hadn’t dawned on them to seek help, they wondered how could they be helped -what good would it do. Incredibly sad 😔#lonely#stigma#ElevatetheConvo
A2 Suicide is still a taboo topic. I grew up going to Catholic School and heard many unkind things about suicide in religion class. I think the language is changing but still a lot of shame and guilt. #elevatetheconvo
A great practical guide - university focused. Still not easy #elevatetheconvo Preventing and Responding to Student Suicide: A Practical Guide for FE and HE Settings
A4- I recently learned about the #farmstress program for farming communities and what I really like about this which is basic social work is "meeting people where they are at". #elevatetheconvo
Postvention means responsive approach aftermath a traumatic event of suicide .In some cultures where this is sensitivity a follow-up on a family or community is minimal as it’s regarded a curse rather than “we need to help” .we need to get community involved #ElevateTheConvo
A3: (2/2) @afspnational "Healing Conversations" is another great resource of #peersupport that connects those with similar relationships and backgrounds. https://afsp.org/healing-conversations…#elevatetheconvo@AFSPNevada
A4: (1/3) The future is within AI, machine learning & lethal means safety. There must be unique supports based upon relationship, cultural background and societal group. #elevatetheconvo
