The following contains spoilers for Young Justice: Phantoms, Episode 23, "Ego and Superego," which premiered Thursday, May 19, on HBO Max.
Young Justice: Phantoms showed that Beast Boy/Gar was deeply affected by Superboy's apparent death. The event traumatized several characters who believed that he was dead -- not realizing that Superboy was stuck in the Phantom Zone, where General Dru-Zod would go on to recruit him. Superboy's absence led to Gar lashing out at loved ones, getting addicted to sleeping pills and going on a downward spiral.
Thankfully, he recently admitted to Black Canary that he needed help -- and in the latest episode, "Ego and Superego," Gar confirmed he's been making immense progress. He got a new pet that seems to be helping him with his depression. Additionally, Young Justice is teasing a storyline with Gar and other fan-favorite characters that might help him in the long run.
At the Taos base, Black Canary held council with other youngsters -- and Gar took center stage, admitting he got a service dog named Wingman, who's been tremendous in getting him out his funk. Gar even turned into a dog himself, playing with the puppy and warming everyone's hearts. His sense of humor even displayed itself when he made a joke at the dog's expense.
His friends were thrilled to see him in high spirits again, having been worried for several episodes that he wouldn't be able to overcome his recent difficulties. To see him optimistic, inspired and full of energy was a huge step forward for him. Gar also admitted that he's patching up broken relationships, too, so it's possible that Young Justice could reunite him with Princess Perdita. But Wingman wasn't the only positive in Gar's storyline.
In Gar's celebrations, he was found fist-bumping Cyborg, who gave his iconic "Booyah!" line. They were clearly supporting each other, which has viewers eager to see them together again after they were originally teammates in Season 3. Back then, they weren't that close nor did they carve out their signature dynamic that's been part of the Teen Titans comics. In the show, however, they could potentially be each other's supporters emotionally, rather than in the field.
Vic's still struggling with being a hybrid of a Fatherbox and human, as well as with the damage his father did to his body and mind, so he has issues Gar can help him with. Gar can use a new best friend as he continues to work through his issues. They're both perfectly placed to help each other in Young Justice continuity, which is perfect as the Justice League is struggling and they still have the challenge of getting Superboy home.
New episodes of Young Justice: Phantoms debut every Thursday on HBO Max.
