This dark edge is not quite present in Baron Cohen's performance.
The only way a show like this will work is with a magnetic presence at its center, and Cohen is engaging at best.
The Spy is another high-wire act from the nonpareil screen presence, albeit a shakier one that often lives and dies on the actor's very particular set of skills.
More intriguing are parallels between the spy's identity crisis and Baron Cohen's own schizophrenic screen persona - the idea that you never know where the man ends and the character he plays begins.
The Spy is an easy-to-digest tale of political intrigue and espionage.
Whether you know who Eli Cohen is or not, The Spy is mostly a drab affair in celebration of a legitimate Israeli hero.
Is this globetrotting man of mystery really the same guy who played Borat? Five minutes in, you won't particularly care.

1d agoLooks great but not enough to make me love it. I wanted to but Sacha tried hard to engage me but it just wasn't enough - and it's hard when you know from the start that it's probably not going to end well.

5d agoAt first I was not going t watch it because I did not thing Sacha was going to be believable in a serious role. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a must watch.
