This 5 guinea piece is of spectacular rarity, produced from treasure that was taken from Spanish ships off Vigo in Northern Spain in 1702. So little gold was captured that only about 20 of these coins were struck, identified by the name VIGO below the Queen’s head.

The Shekel coinage of Carthage began in near-pure gold, but ongoing wars resulted in the purity of the coin being reduced. New coin: An amazingly detailed denarius of Trajan, minted during his fourth consulship (COS IIII) 101-102 AD, likely around the time of his return from the First Dacian War - on the reverse, Victory sacrifices over a lighted altar.

The name grosso is a derivative of the French Denarius Grossus (grossus meaning thick). It's the basis for many variations of the name used in different languages, in the East & West, to denote a thick silver coin & later as a general denomination.
