    Very unfortunate wording by the MPEG head. Earlier standards were developed when like-minded people couldn't collaborate due to the absence of the Internet. But, patent issues still prevent open & free standards from adopting the best algorithms for encoding videos

    This is true not only for NVIDIA cards, but, even for Intel ones (i.e, a Kaby Lake system using integrated GPU for Netflix 4K playback). The 'Get HEVC Video Extension' is free. Based on my interaction with MS, this does NOT seem to be related to patent licensing

    It looks like HDMI 2.1 is official, so it's important to focus on what in the spec matters and what isn't important. 8K and 10K support are not important. It's smart to make the bandwidth huge, but those are a long way away.
