    Very unfortunate wording by the MPEG head. Earlier standards were developed when like-minded people couldn't collaborate due to the absence of the Internet. But, patent issues still prevent open & free standards from adopting the best algorithms for encoding videos

    In which the head of MPEG explains going with open and free standards will dry up innovation...

    This is true not only for NVIDIA cards, but, even for Intel ones (i.e, a Kaby Lake system using integrated GPU for Netflix 4K playback). The 'Get HEVC Video Extension' is free. Based on my interaction with MS, this does NOT seem to be related to patent licensing

    It looks like HDMI 2.1 is official, so it's important to focus on what in the spec matters and what isn't important. 8K and 10K support are not important. It's smart to make the bandwidth huge, but those are a long way away.

    Yet another proof of the reason to avoid products that are cloud-reliant for core functionality

    Logitech's Harmony Link was terrible, easy to accidentally brick, and its Hub is a better product in every way. Still doesn't make this OK:

    MAMR drives will just be like std. PMR drives wrt perf & firmware. SMR / TDMR can optionally be added on top to eke out more capacity

    Re: MAMR article, no significant (read) complexities/perf issues with MAMR like you get with SMR (and TDMR?)?

    Not clear what sort of disaster needs to be recovered from. But, QNAP supports and Synology has high availability

    so that's not disaster recovery at all from a DC perspective.
