Satish Nambiar - Force Commander and Head of Mission of the United Nations Protection Force in the Former Yugoslavia, 1992-93

Satish served in the Indian Army Training team in Iraq from July 1977 to January 1979, and as the Military Adviser at the High Commission of India in London from December 1983 to November 1987. As Director General of Military Operations, he negotiated an agreement on exchange of information on the conduct of military exercises and aircraft and an end to hostile actions on the Line of Control in the Poonch Sector. He was the first Force Commander and Head of Mission of the United Nations forces in the former Yugoslavia. He was awarded the Vir Chakra for bravery in battle and retired as the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff in August 1994. The President of India conferred him with the Padma Bhushan, a high civilian honour in 2009.
 
He is actively engaged in the research of UN peacekeeping operations, national security, defence strategy, and international relations. He has authored chapters in publications on peace operations, international intervention, just war and genocide.  He is the author of “For the Honour of India: A History of Indian Peacekeeping” (2009). In November 2003 he was nominated by Kofi Annan to serve on the High Level Panel on “Threats, Challenges and Change” that produced the report “A More Secure World: Our Shared Responsibility” which formed the basis of the UN Secretary General’s report to the 2005 World Summit.He is a member of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi, and joined the Institute as a ‘Distinguished Fellow’ in 2011.
