Guitar Hero Live wants to immerse you in music with always-on Guitar Hero TV

To hear Activision and FreeStyleGames tell it, everything in Guitar Hero Live — which launches Oct. 20 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as unspecified mobile devices — is designed with an eye toward the present and the future.Guitar Hero Live is built to take advantage of modern internet-connected gaming hardware; built to capitalize on new monetization methods; built for the way people consume music in 2015, as opposed to when the series debuted a decade ago. During a pre-E3 demo of the game in New York earlier this month, it became clear that that's a double-edged sword. This demo focused on Guitar Hero TV, the half of Guitar Hero Live that isn't the standard campaign. GHTV is a live service with a full schedule of music "programming," and...

Destiny veterans get VIP bonuses with Taken King DLC

If you were going to wait to hop into Destiny until the Taken King DLC launches on Sept. 15, here's a good reason not to: Bungie will be doling out exclusive bonuses to players who head into The Taken King at level 30-plus or have purchased both previous expansion packs. Here are the details: Players who reach level 30-plus on at least one character or buy both prior expansion packs by August 31 and buy The Taken King by Feb. 1, 2016 will receive an exclusive commemorative "Founder's Fortune" Year 1 emblem, Sparrow, armor shader "and more." What's the "and more"? We'd guess that it's "Gjallarhorn 2: Gjallarhorner" if we hadn't just totally made that up.

Destiny's next expansion is The Taken King, launching Sept. 15

Destiny's next expansion is The Taken King, and it will be released Sept. 15, developer Bungie announced today during Sony's E3 2015 press briefing. Today's announcement confirms a leak from earlier this month. The Taken King will introduce new subclasses for each Guardian type, along with new super moves. It will cost $39.99, which is twice as much as Destiny's first two expansions, and physical and digital Collector's Editions will be available for $79.99. Both Collector's Editions come with vanilla Destiny and the first two expansions as well as The Taken King, along with exclusive content. "Oryx is coming, Guardian," the narrator intones in the trailer, which you can watch above. "You got his attention. Now go get his head." In Destiny's first expansion, The Dark Below, players...

King's Quest: A Knight to Remember hits in late July on PlayStation and Xbox

The first chapter of developer The Odd Gentlemen's reimagined version of King's Quest is called King's Quest: A Knight to Remember and will arrive on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC in late July, publisher Sierra announced today. Polygon saw some of the first chapter during a recent visit to the developer's Los Angeles office, and it's clear that the adventure game series is being reborn in the hands of loving fans who want the broadest audience possible to play the game. King's Quest: A Knight to Remember is a family game — and not a children's game — the developers explained. They want to create something that the entire family can play together and enjoy. Think of it like a Pixar movie, the kind of entertainment that transcends age barriers. M...

FIFA 16 is getting significant design upgrades

Late last month, Electronic Arts heralded the arrival of women's soccer as a big change coming to FIFA 16. But there are also many significant design tweaks and improvements coming to this year's game. The company announced at E3 today that it has significantly upgraded defensive AI, so that strikers will find it more difficult to game the system. Chief among these is a much smarter system for intercepting through-balls from the midfield. I played a demo at a recent media event and found the alertness of AI players much enhanced and the overall experience greatly improved as a result. Players are less likely to stand around gawping as balls are played into open spaces, and are more likely to anticipate the sort of passes that we see in professional soccer all the time. They...

Madden NFL 16 gets fantasy football-inspired mode, upgraded passing game

EA Sports' Ultimate Team, the fantasy team mode with virtual trading cards that's available in most of the publisher's games, is phenomenally popular — as is fantasy football. This year, Madden NFL 16 developer EA Tiburon is bringing fantasy football into Madden, in a way, with a new mode called Draft Champions."Fantasy sports and football go hand in hand," said Seann Graddy, senior producer on Madden 16, in an interview with Polygon. "People just love to draft. They like to get together in a room and pick their team. They think they have more insight about a certain player. We thought about how we could bring the draft experience into Madden." Draft Champions offers you a makeshift squad based on your favorite NFL team. You then take part in a series of draft rounds, picking one...

Watch this 6 minute Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain trailer

Hideo Kojima shared the latest trailer for his upcoming opus, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, on Geoff Keighley's YouTube E3 special. The trailer, set to New Order's Elegia, clocks in close to a hefty six minutes ... but did you expect anything less from Kojima? Keighley introduced the trailer with the following anecdote: About a month ago I went to Tokyo and had lunch with a good friend of mine, Hideo Kojima. He's been through a lot over the past few months as you've probably read online, regarding his relationship with Konami. But he's been there, working at the Konami office, sequestered away, working on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. When I met with Mr. Kojima, he told me how proud he was of the game that he's finishing up under very difficult circumstances. He's...

The Walking Dead: Michonne coming from Telltale Games this fall

Kicking off YouTube's E3 live coverage was a reveal for the newest project in Telltale Game's Walking Dead series, a three-episode miniseries titled The Walking Dead: Michonne. Telltale says that this story follows series favorite Michonne and "explores her untold journey during the time between issues #126 and #139 and "players will discover what took Michonne away from Rick, Ezekiel, and the rest of her trusted group... and what brought her back." "In many ways, Michonne herself is a reflection of the world of The Walking Dead. She is brutal and cold on the outside, but deep beneath what is broken, she remains hopeful, trying to claw her way out of the darkness that surrounds her," said Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead. "In our effort to bring the world of the comic and...

Report: Rare classics like Battletoads returning in anthology

Adding fuel to earlier talk that Rare classics like Blast Corps and Banjo-Kazooie would be resurrected, Kotaku reports that a retail listing for "Rare Replay" is an anthology that could feature up to 30 games. Earlier this year, Ken Lobb, the creative director for Microsoft Studios, said the company would bring back franchises like Perfect Dark, Viva Pinata and Battletoads at some point. He didn't specifically mention an anthology, but nothing rules that out as a first step, as Kotaku notes. Significantly, head of Xbox Phil Spencer also wore a Battletoads t-shirt at a Windows event earlier this year (pictured), which generated a lot of chatter but no response officially from Xbox. The number 30 is relevant because this is the 30th anniversary of Rare's founding. The company was...

Rumor has it Transformers' next game is a cel-shaded brawler (update)

If this shot of Optimus Prime duking it out with Devastator is any indication, the next Transformers game will be a brawler — for Xbox 360 — done in a cel-shaded art style evocative of the toy line's cartoons in the 1980s. Update: A listing from Amazon Canada shows Transformers: Devastation launching Oct. 6 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, with the following box art. Transformers: Devastation is the name of this game, according to Pure Xbox, which said the images and information came from unnamed sources. Activision is the publisher, says Pure Xbox, and more will be learned at E3. Pure Xbox was curiously specific about Xbox 360 as a platform for Transformers: Devastation, meaning this could be a downloadable title. Nothing rules out an Xbox One...

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer is 20 years old this year, with the 2016 iteration coming on Sept. 15 throughout the Americas, Sept. 17 in Europe and Sept. 18 in the U.K., the company announced today. Some of the changes in PES 2016 are shown in this four-minute trailer, released by publisher Konami today. They include the usual upgrades to ball physics and more advanced visual representations of players and environments, as well as the following: A tweaked collision system with a greater variety of outcomes when players bump into one another. Aerial strength battles using the left stick, when the ball is lofted high and needs to be won. More feints and dribbles when players run at defenders. Better use of open space by AIs, allowing more combination plays. Smarter goalkeepers...

How Microsoft can 'win' E3

We tackled Nintendo yesterday, and now it's time for Microsoft. What's it going to take for Microsoft to win E3? What we mean by "win" For the purposes of this article we'll define a "win" as a press event that energizes existing fans and will help to bring in new fans while helping the company in question improve their bottom line. If the show gets everyone talking about games and initiatives that will cause both existing and new fans to get out their wallets, that's a "win." This isn't a zero-sum game, where one win means that someone else loses; it's very possible at the end of the show that each company will have "won." Microsoft in a nutshell Microsoft announced the Xbox One with a disastrous event that showcased all the worst aspects of the company's digital strategy...
