Hands-on with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 multiplayer

The best kind of changes are the ones that make you think, "Well, yeah. I can’t believe I never thought of that before." Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is full of those. At E3 2015, we went hands-on with a pre-alpha version of developer Treyarch’s sixth proper Call of Duty game. It is loaded with tweaks and changes automations that seem, like most things, obvious in hindsight. At least from a certain point of view. But in many ways, Black Ops 3 is so different that it also left us wondering what, exactly, makes a Call of Duty game — and whether Treyarch’s ambitious plan evolve the well-established franchise is incongruous with one of the most popular first-person shooter series in history. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 does many game-changing and ambitious things. We had to wonder whether, at...

So, what exactly happens in No Man's Sky?

"People are asking, what the game is all about, what do you do," says Hello Games' Sean Murray. He perches on the edge of a leather chair, leaning into a TV screen where No Man's Sky's unmistakeable hues are glowing. He is about to demo the game to me. "Yes," I reply. "They are." I've been wanting to play this game for a long time. I'm excited and I'm curious, but I'm also aware that this is a game that has revealed very little of itself to the world. By virtue of appearing to be something that is highly original, from a developer that is outside the mainstream, No Man's Sky has accrued a following, as well as expectations. Since its first appearance back in 2013, it has presented itself as an entire universe of possibilities, an endless array of worlds, waiting to be discovered and...

IO Interactive's new Hitman commences with a digital release on Dec. 8, introducing players to a a "live and ever expanding world of digital assassinations," the developer said at Square Enix's E3 presentation. The game will launch on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. IO will roll out a schedule of missions, hits and other objectives for the Hitman community at the launch and thereafter. Christian Elverdam, the creative director for Hitman, described a scenario in which all players will be given a shot at an objective, with the outcome permanently recorded. "Every NPC has a name," he said. The nature of the new mode makes the new Hitman into a sandbox game, he said. "It is up to you to use brute force, or orchestrate a genuine masterpiece of assassination," he said. The new game...

Square Enix will release Final Fantasy 7 on iOS devices, executive producer Shinji Hashimoto announced at Square Enix's E3 2015 press conference today. Final Fantasy 7 for iOS will be released this summer, Hashimoto said. Square Enix also delayed the PC port of Final Fantasy 7 for PlayStation 4, which the publisher announced at PlayStation Experience in December. Earlier this week, Square Enix also announced the highly anticipated remake of Final Fantasy 7. That game is expected to hit PlayStation 4 first.

Square Enix is making a new Nier with Platinum Games

Square Enix's Yosuke Saito announced at E3 2015 today that the publisher is working on a new Nier game for PlayStation 4. Platinum Games is collaborating with Square Enix on development of the new game, which Saito did not name. In a teaser trailer, Square Enix named some of the creators involved, including character designer Akihiko Yoshida, game designer Takashi Taura, game director Yoko Taro and producer Atsushi Inaba from Platinum. According to Taro, Square Enix approached Platinum Games to developer the new Nier with the intention that they'd add more action to the game. Taro said that details on the game are secret for now, but promised more information on the new Nier project this fall. The original Nier was developed by Square Enix and Cavia. It was released for PlayStation 3...

Guitar Hero Live wants to immerse you in music with always-on Guitar Hero TV

To hear Activision and FreeStyleGames tell it, everything in Guitar Hero Live — which launches Oct. 20 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as unspecified mobile devices — is designed with an eye toward the present and the future.Guitar Hero Live is built to take advantage of modern internet-connected gaming hardware; built to capitalize on new monetization methods; built for the way people consume music in 2015, as opposed to when the series debuted a decade ago. During a pre-E3 demo of the game in New York earlier this month, it became clear that that's a double-edged sword. This demo focused on Guitar Hero TV, the half of Guitar Hero Live that isn't the standard campaign. GHTV is a live service with a full schedule of music "programming," and...

Obsidian 'super excited' for South Park sequel, even if they're not making it

Ubisoft's surprise announcement of a sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth, which will be developed in-house, left many wondering how the original developing studio, Obsidian Entertainment, felt about it. They're cool with it, basically. "We are super excited to see another South Park game getting made, and can't wait to play it ourselves," Feargus Urquhart, the CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, said in an email to Polygon. Urquhart pointed to the ongoing projects keeping Obsidian busy, such as Armored Warfare (which is in Steam Early Access) and Pillars of Eternity, which launched in March and has many new features coming. "Internally, [we] are coming close to 200 people working on games," Urquhart said. So, it makes sense that this was not necessarily a project taken from Obsidian...

Destiny veterans get VIP bonuses with Taken King DLC

If you were going to wait to hop into Destiny until the Taken King DLC launches on Sept. 15, here's a good reason not to: Bungie will be doling out exclusive bonuses to players who head into The Taken King at level 30-plus or have purchased both previous expansion packs. Here are the details: Players who reach level 30-plus on at least one character or buy both prior expansion packs by August 31 and buy The Taken King by Feb. 1, 2016 will receive an exclusive commemorative "Founder's Fortune" Year 1 emblem, Sparrow, armor shader "and more." What's the "and more"? We'd guess that it's "Gjallarhorn 2: Gjallarhorner" if we hadn't just totally made that up.

Drake's earnest 30 seconds at Sony's press event

It's no secret that many E3 demos aren't live. Sometimes, when you do show a game live, things go wrong. Unfortunately, that happened tonight at Sony's press event, with the Uncharted 4 gameplay demo. The demo stalled once the action was supposed to start up, Drake stays put, gawking at the — beautifully animated — crowd. It was an awkward 30 seconds, but hey, that crowd looked really nice. The rest of the demo went swimmingly once the game was restarted (watch the entire seven minute video here!) so Drake's glitch didn't sour the crowd on the game.

Uncharted 4 looks absolutely stunning on the PlayStation 4

Sony had a pretty amazing press conference at E3 this year, but the company chose to close its show with an expected title, and a guaranteed blockbuster: Uncharted 4. Technical difficulties caused the demo to be restarted after Drake awkwardly stood in front of a, admittedly beautiful, crowd of people, but the rest of the demo went smoothly. The crowd technology actually looked a bit like Assassin's Creed, but gunfire quickly broke out. The game looks, to put it bluntly, amazing. The Uncharted series knows how to make Nathan feel like a natural part of the environment, and seeing what the series can do on the PlayStation 4 is quite the treat. You can watch the video below. `

'PlayStation is the new home of Call of Duty,' says PlayStation CEO on exclusive deal

Sony has taken over for Microsoft as far as Call of Duty exclusivity goes, with a new deal that will bring all map packs to PlayStation first from this point forward, PlayStation CEO Andrew House announced today during Sony's E3 2015 press briefing. The exclusive arrangement will begin with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, which launches Nov. 6 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. It is also in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Developer Treyarch will kick off Black Ops 3's multiplayer beta this August exclusively on PS4. "PlayStation is the new home of Call of Duty," said House. This is an inversion of a relationship that began with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007, where map packs launched first on Xbox. For more on Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, check out our campaign...

Final Fantasy 7 remake coming to PlayStation 4

After years of rumor, speculation and false hope, Square Enix's classic role-playing game Final Fantasy 7 is finally getting a remake for PlayStation 4, Sony announced at its E3 2015 press conference today. In a trailer, Square Enix confirmed some of the staff working on the new Final Fantasy 7: Yoshinori Kitase will serve as producer and Tetsuya Nomura will serve as director. The Final Fantasy 7 remake is coming first to PS4, Sony's Adam Boyes said, seemingly indicating that it will come to other platforms as well. The Final Fantasy 7 remake, a long-held desire for Final Fantasy fans since Square Enix showed a tech demo featuring characters from the game in a PlayStation 3 tech demo.
