The new Hitman begins Dec. 8 with a digital release

IO Interactive's new Hitman commences with a digital release on Dec. 8, introducing players to a a "live and ever expanding world of digital assassinations," the developer said at Square Enix's E3 presentation. The game will launch on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. IO will roll out a schedule of missions, hits and other objectives for the Hitman community at the launch and thereafter. Christian Elverdam, the creative director for Hitman, described a scenario in which all players will be given a shot at an objective, with the outcome permanently recorded. "Every NPC has a name," he said. The nature of the new mode makes the new Hitman into a sandbox game, he said. "It is up to you to use brute force, or orchestrate a genuine masterpiece of assassination," he said. The new game...

Superhot is a whirling ballet of bullets

A lot of people are looking forward to Superhot, which is due to launch later this year, not least the 12,000 Kickstarter backers who funded this curiously appealing game to the tune of $250K.Originally planned for Windows PC, Mac and Linux, the time-stop shooter will also simultaneously launch on Xbox One: this version is playable at E3 via the Microsoft booth. The game is a minimalist shooter that offers 40 short and elegant action sequences, during which AI assailants attack the player with firearms. Always in first-person, the player is armed, and not just with a gun. The central twist in Superhot is that the player stops time by ceasing to move. During this standing-still time, it is possible to aim weapons. With an Xbox One controller, aiming can take some getting used to, as a...

The latest iteration of the historical assassination franchise takes place in London during the Industrial Revolution, and stars two playable Assassins: Evie Frye and her twin brother Jacob. Grief your friends in The Division's 'Dark Zone'

As mentioned earlier, The Division showed off its multiplayer at Ubisoft's E3 news conference with a demonstration of life inside The Division. What looks like a normal grab-n-go mission takes one hell of a turn once the helicopter arrives to get everyone out. That's right, this is straight up betrayal, and one wonders what controls will be in place to keep every mission from turning into four people quadruple-crossing one another the whole time. Can't see for sure what that would be in this video, but it's a cool twist nonetheless.

Anno 2205 takes city building to outer space

Ubisoft revealed Anno 2205 during its E3 press conference, an update to the publisher's storied Anno series that sees the city building simulator leaving its earthly confines for outer space. The "real time strategy, business simulation and city building" game will be released on Windows PCs on November 3, later this year. In Anno 2205 players will join mankind’s next step into the future, with the promise of building a better tomorrow by expanding into space. Players must develop rich metropolises on Earth that are capable of launching missions to the moon as they race to establish production colonies on the lunar surface. The Division launches March 8 on PS4, PC and Xbox One

Ubisoft dated The Division for March 8 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The game also will stage betas on all of those platforms early next year. Ubisoft made the announcement after introducing what sounds like the PvP zone of The Division. It's "the dark zone," a contaminated area set in the heart of Manhattan. Here's a video of the action. The difference is teammates can double-cross one another, as the demonstration shows once it's time to extract. Guess someone's getting a poor peer review at The Division.

King's Quest: A Knight to Remember hits in late July on PlayStation and Xbox

The first chapter of developer The Odd Gentlemen's reimagined version of King's Quest is called King's Quest: A Knight to Remember and will arrive on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC in late July, publisher Sierra announced today. Polygon saw some of the first chapter during a recent visit to the developer's Los Angeles office, and it's clear that the adventure game series is being reborn in the hands of loving fans who want the broadest audience possible to play the game. King's Quest: A Knight to Remember is a family game — and not a children's game — the developers explained. They want to create something that the entire family can play together and enjoy. Think of it like a Pixar movie, the kind of entertainment that transcends age barriers. M...

FIFA 16 is getting significant design upgrades

Late last month, Electronic Arts heralded the arrival of women's soccer as a big change coming to FIFA 16. But there are also many significant design tweaks and improvements coming to this year's game. The company announced at E3 today that it has significantly upgraded defensive AI, so that strikers will find it more difficult to game the system. Chief among these is a much smarter system for intercepting through-balls from the midfield. I played a demo at a recent media event and found the alertness of AI players much enhanced and the overall experience greatly improved as a result. Players are less likely to stand around gawping as balls are played into open spaces, and are more likely to anticipate the sort of passes that we see in professional soccer all the time. They...

Unravel strings players along in a pretty 2D world of stone and water

Unravel is a 2D platformer featuring a cute character. Created by a small outfit based on the northeastern coast of Sweden, it's being published by Electronic Arts. There are three noteworthy aspects to Unravel, the first being a basic mechanic of guiding a central character who’s body carries both the means to progress and a potentially fatal flaw. Yarnie is made of twine and unravels as it moves, creating lines that players must use cleverly in order to solve the physical puzzles that impede progression. Loss of too much twine leads to an ultimate unraveling. Secondly, this is a platformer with a big, mushy story that seeks to tug at those heartstrings. It is a game that seeks meaning in the physicality of its own setup. Finally, it is a game about place. Northern Sweden is a land of...

Star Wars: The Old Republic's next expansion arrives Oct. 27, is a new hope for MMOs

Star Wars: The Old Republic's next expansion, Knights of the Fallen Empire, is coming Oct. 27, armed with a broom. Not literally a broom. There will be lightsabers. But figuratively. BioWare is using the expansion to have a big house-clearing of its MMO, which is now more than three years old and has been in development for nine years. For a start, the expansion is free to subscribers. Also, anyone who engages with the expansion has the option to immediately jump to a Level 60 character. It's basically a personal role-playing saga starring the Outlander, a veteran of the Great Galactic War whose task is nothing less than taking down the Emperor of the Eternal Throne. EA is essentially saying that anyone who is interested in a big Star Wars RPG from BioWare can play one right now. But...

Mass Effect: Andromeda is coming holiday 2016

The next Mass Effect is titled Mass Effect: Andromeda, and BioWare will deliver it in the holiday 2016 quarter, Electronic Arts announced at its E3 news conference today. BioWare's showed the above introduction video, set to Johnny Cash's "Ghost Riders in the Sky." "While we aren't ready to go into too many details just yet, as you saw in the trailer and can tell by the name, this game is very much a new adventure, taking place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy," BioWare said on its blog. "You will play a human, male or female, though that's actually not the character you saw in the trailer (more on that later). You'll be exploring an all-new galaxy, Andromeda, and piloting the new and improved Mako you saw. And through it all, you will have a new team of...

Watch this 6 minute Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain trailer

Hideo Kojima shared the latest trailer for his upcoming opus, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, on Geoff Keighley's YouTube E3 special. The trailer, set to New Order's Elegia, clocks in close to a hefty six minutes ... but did you expect anything less from Kojima? Keighley introduced the trailer with the following anecdote: About a month ago I went to Tokyo and had lunch with a good friend of mine, Hideo Kojima. He's been through a lot over the past few months as you've probably read online, regarding his relationship with Konami. But he's been there, working at the Konami office, sequestered away, working on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. When I met with Mr. Kojima, he told me how proud he was of the game that he's finishing up under very difficult circumstances. He's...

Riverside survival adventure The Flame in the Flood floats on puzzles and charm

The Flame in the Flood is a survival game with a difference. Rendered in distinctive style, it's the story of a girl and her dog, travelling down river, trying to stay alive. The game, shown at Microsoft's E3 conference today, is certainly beautiful. It is also challenging, calling on the player to make lateral connections between objects and problems in order to find resolution. This isn't a game about fighting, but about exploring and experimenting. It is a series of puzzles set against a backdrop of procedurally generated physical locations. It's being made by The Molasses Flood, a group of developers who were cut loose when Irrational drastically downsized and who are now trying to create their own distinctive work. Over the course of a full game,  the water-rafters pass through a...
