Chronos, an atmospheric role-playing game centered around a labyrinth and an aging protagonist, is in development for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset said David Adams, the CEO and founder of Gunfire Games during the Oculus debut event. In Chronos, players take on the role of a hero who needs to free his land from the clutches of an from evil dragon. To do so, they will need to travel through an ancient labyrinth. But there's a catch: It only opens once a year, and if the protagonist fails they have to wait a year to try again. Chronos' narrative also affects gameplay. As the character ages, they become a tougher and more seasoned warrior, learning from their mistakes and from the exploration of the caverns, ruins and tombs. Flying will return to World of Warcraft's new zones after all

When we interviewed World of Warcraft lead designer Ion Hazzikostas last month about the upcoming new zone, Tanaan Jungle, one controversial decision stood out: Blizzard had decided not to add flying into the new zones of the Warlords of Draenor expansion pack, and possibly not into future expansions at all. Now it seems that Blizzard has reversed this decision, though players will have to jump through some hoops in order to unlock the feature. In a post on the official World of Warcraft blog, Hazzikostas reiterates much of what he told Polygon in our interview. "World of Warcraft is full of memorable moments that are only possible when players explore the world by ground," he writes. However, Hazzikostas goes on to acknowledge that many players still want flying mounts. He says the...

Hearthstone's Tavern Brawl mode adds rotating weekly challenges

Two days ago, Blizzard teased a new mode for its popular free-to-play card game, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Today the developer has spilled the beans on what this addition actually is: tavern brawl, a new mode that will mix up the regular gameplay and decks currently available in the game. Tavern brawl mode will pit players against each other using special challenges, new rulesets or custom decks. Sometimes a tavern brawl will force players to use a specific preset deck, while other times it will task players with putting together a new deck based on unusual guidelines. There will be a new tavern brawl offered every week, but the events will only run Wednesday through Sunday. Players will not be able to select the mode on Mondays and Tuesdays, while the next event is being spun...

Indie Fund is throwing its weight behind fantasy-driven digital boardgame Armello and will fund the project, organizers announced today. "Armello is both extremely pleasing to the eye and crammed full of creamy gameplay goodness; it somehow manages to feel simultaneously familiar and innovative," Kilduff-Taylor said. Minecraft meets ecology simulation in an open-world educational game

Veteran studio Strange Loop Games is embarking on an ambitious project to create a new kind of open world multiplayer game where the survival of every player on the server depends on careful management of in-game resources. With funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Eco hopes to become a platform for teaching middle school students about ecology in a communal, cloud-based game world. Strange Loop calls their project a "global survival game." In Eco's fiction there is an impending disaster looming over humanity — an event like a meteor strike, a drought or a flood. The clock is ticking, and players must work together to prevent the onrushing apocalypse or risk "server-wide perma death." The tools at players disposal are familiar to anyone who's played Minecraft. Eco's world is...

Heroes of the Storm is expensive: This is your guide to what to buy, and avoid, in the store

Blizzard’s new MOBA, Heroes of the Storm, officially launched this week and many new players are trying it out.Like most free-to-play games, Heroes of the Storm has a shop that sells characters and cosmetic items for gold, its in-game currency, as well as for cash. While Heroes, to its credit, prices every item in its shop in actual money rather than requiring the purchase of some intermediate currency, there are still a number of bundle options and price tiers that can be very confusing. I am going to help explain how the Heroes shop works, and where to find the best values when spending your gold and real money in the game. Going Free to Play Heroes of the Storm’s in-game currency is called gold, and you earn it by playing games, hitting level milestones, and completing daily...

Bizarre puzzle heads are staring at you, in Gnog

Anyone who needs further convincing that Double Fine is a company that is interested in the weird and the wonderful need only look at Gnog, a puzzle game from Canadian developer Ko-op Mode. It's a series of huge monster faces wrought in distinctively bold art styles, like big toys. These are complex machines, of sorts, which are connected in mysterious ways. The player prods, pulls and fiddles until the puzzle is resolved. But the nature of the puzzle itself is usually a bit of a mystery. This is a game about play. "Playing the game is like discovering a weird toy you've never experienced," explains Ko-op's Saleem Dabbous. "You mess around with it at first and figure out what it's about, then you try to solve that puzzle." "Games are often looked upon as toys, but rarely is the...

Hands-on with Fortnite, Epic Games' curious survival construction shooter

The creators of Fortnite, Epic Games' new PC game that blends scavenging, construction and shooting, hope to create a game that's as enjoyable as the combination of peanut butter and chocolate. Fortnite, they hope, marries exploration, building and action into something new, something different from the studio's Unreal Tournament and Gears of War games. It's easy to look to other popular games that focus primarily on those gameplay components — Minecraft for building things, DayZ for exploration and survival — when describing Fortnite. But Fortnite is not those games jammed together with third-person shooting, based on our time with the game at a recent preview event. It's also not quite the video game equivalent of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup just yet — the game is still very much in...
