Watch someone strip down and reassemble Xbox One's Elite Controller

The Xbox One Elite controller is a $150 piece of next-gen tech designed to outlast and outperform the standard controller. The controller includes an array of magnetized thumbsticks, directional pads and paddles that can be instantly attached, detached and rearranged to create the sort of controller that feels designed for your hand and your specific needs. The idea was to create something that could stand up to the grueling gaming habits of the hardest of hardcore gamers, and also deliver the level of customization they've grown accustom to with specialized, third-party controllers. "We designed this from the ground up," said David Prien, programming manager of the Elite Xbox One controller. "The first couple of months we didn't even start hardware, we went to people's houses. We went...

The new Hitman begins Dec. 8 with a digital release

IO Interactive's new Hitman commences with a digital release on Dec. 8, introducing players to a a "live and ever expanding world of digital assassinations," the developer said at Square Enix's E3 presentation. The game will launch on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. IO will roll out a schedule of missions, hits and other objectives for the Hitman community at the launch and thereafter. Christian Elverdam, the creative director for Hitman, described a scenario in which all players will be given a shot at an objective, with the outcome permanently recorded. "Every NPC has a name," he said. The nature of the new mode makes the new Hitman into a sandbox game, he said. "It is up to you to use brute force, or orchestrate a genuine masterpiece of assassination," he said. The new game...

Guitar Hero Live wants to immerse you in music with always-on Guitar Hero TV

To hear Activision and FreeStyleGames tell it, everything in Guitar Hero Live — which launches Oct. 20 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as unspecified mobile devices — is designed with an eye toward the present and the future.Guitar Hero Live is built to take advantage of modern internet-connected gaming hardware; built to capitalize on new monetization methods; built for the way people consume music in 2015, as opposed to when the series debuted a decade ago. During a pre-E3 demo of the game in New York earlier this month, it became clear that that's a double-edged sword. This demo focused on Guitar Hero TV, the half of Guitar Hero Live that isn't the standard campaign. GHTV is a live service with a full schedule of music "programming," and...

Obsidian 'super excited' for South Park sequel, even if they're not making it

Ubisoft's surprise announcement of a sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth, which will be developed in-house, left many wondering how the original developing studio, Obsidian Entertainment, felt about it. They're cool with it, basically. "We are super excited to see another South Park game getting made, and can't wait to play it ourselves," Feargus Urquhart, the CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, said in an email to Polygon. Urquhart pointed to the ongoing projects keeping Obsidian busy, such as Armored Warfare (which is in Steam Early Access) and Pillars of Eternity, which launched in March and has many new features coming. "Internally, [we] are coming close to 200 people working on games," Urquhart said. So, it makes sense that this was not necessarily a project taken from Obsidian...

Why isn't GoldenEye in Rare's HD game collection? Here's their answer

One of Microsoft's most interesting announcements from this E3 is Rare Replay, a collection of 30 Rare Software games spanning the past 30 years, all available for just under 30 dollars. And while many of Rare's most iconic franchises appear in the collection — the Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Viva Piñata franchises are all represented in their entirety — one of the company's most well-loved games of all time is absent: GoldenEye 007 on the N64. But why? While some might assume the game's non-appearance may have something to do with Rare's attempted GoldenEye XBLA remake way back in 2008 and the resulting licensing kerfuffle between Nintendo and Microsoft that ensued, Rare insisted that isn't the case. Speaking to Polygon at an E3 event last night, Rare said GoldenEye's absence...

Rare Replay lets you rewind certain games, has documentary clips

Microsoft has a simple pitch for its new Rare collection: 30 games for $30 to celebrate Rare’s 30th anniversary. Following the announcement on Monday, Microsoft held a press event with the game on display, so now we know a bit more about what’s in the package. I tried out a handful of the 30 games at the event, and all ran smoothly without any obvious issues. For certain older titles there’s an option to add scanlines by clicking in the right analog stick, and on others there’s an option to rewind the games, but for the most part the games remain untouched. So you’ll get online play for the games that had it originally, like Perfect Dark Zero, but you won’t get it added in to older games like Battletoads. Outside of the games themselves, the collection also includes bonus features...

Destiny veterans get VIP bonuses with Taken King DLC

If you were going to wait to hop into Destiny until the Taken King DLC launches on Sept. 15, here's a good reason not to: Bungie will be doling out exclusive bonuses to players who head into The Taken King at level 30-plus or have purchased both previous expansion packs. Here are the details: Players who reach level 30-plus on at least one character or buy both prior expansion packs by August 31 and buy The Taken King by Feb. 1, 2016 will receive an exclusive commemorative "Founder's Fortune" Year 1 emblem, Sparrow, armor shader "and more." What's the "and more"? We'd guess that it's "Gjallarhorn 2: Gjallarhorner" if we hadn't just totally made that up.

See Assassin's Creed's female lead take on London's seedy underworld

Fresh off a cinematic trailer at Ubisoft's E3 news conference: Assassin's Creed Syndicate followed that with a cinematic montage showing the game's female protagonist, Evie Frye, in action. Specializing in throwing knives, Evie is a dreaded presence in the gang-infested London underworld of Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Assassin's Creed Syndicate will get PS4-exclusive missions, called The Dreadful Crimes, which are playable by either protagonist.

Destiny's next expansion is The Taken King, launching Sept. 15

Destiny's next expansion is The Taken King, and it will be released Sept. 15, developer Bungie announced today during Sony's E3 2015 press briefing. Today's announcement confirms a leak from earlier this month. The Taken King will introduce new subclasses for each Guardian type, along with new super moves. It will cost $39.99, which is twice as much as Destiny's first two expansions, and physical and digital Collector's Editions will be available for $79.99. Both Collector's Editions come with vanilla Destiny and the first two expansions as well as The Taken King, along with exclusive content. "Oryx is coming, Guardian," the narrator intones in the trailer, which you can watch above. "You got his attention. Now go get his head." In Destiny's first expansion, The Dark Below, players...

The Kinect is dead

Microsoft had an incredibly strong showing at its E3 press conference, keeping the focus on games even when announcing things like backward compatibility. Mod support for Fallout 4 is a great addition to Xbox One in general and we hope it comes to more games, and again it's going to make the act of playing games more enjoyable. Gone was the focus on media functions or the idea that we really want to use the Xbox One to consume sports. Instead it was either news that would help you play games, such as the updated controller, or games themselves, such as the amazing $30 Rare collection. A quick note on that controller: Does anyone else think Scuf Gaming is having a very, very bad day now that the official controller will offer all the features that used to make Scuf's products so...

Assassin's Creed Syndicate trailer shows off Victorian-era transportation

Assassin's Creed Syndicate developer Ubisoft Quebec didn't bring a gameplay demo to Ubisoft's E3 2015 press briefing, but the studio did play a gorgeous cinematic trailer. You can watch the trailer above. Ubisoft also posted a gameplay walkthrough on YouTube that you can see below. Ubisoft originally announced Assassin's Creed Syndicate about a month ago. The latest iteration of the historical assassination franchise takes place in London during the Industrial Revolution, and stars two playable Assassins: Evie Frye and her twin brother Jacob. Rainbow Six Siege brings Terrorist Hunt co-op mode to E3, beta starts Sept. 24

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege publisher Ubisoft will kick off the multiplayer shooter's beta Sept. 24, the company announced during its E3 press briefing today. The beta will be available on all of those platforms. Developer Ubisoft Montreal presented a live demo of one of Rainbow Six Siege's four Terrorist Hunt ("TerroHunt") modes. This one pitted five players against AI terrorists in an infiltration of an embassy. You can see the full demo above, and a trailer below.

Grief your friends in The Division's 'Dark Zone'

As mentioned earlier, The Division showed off its multiplayer at Ubisoft's E3 news conference with a demonstration of life inside The Division. What looks like a normal grab-n-go mission takes one hell of a turn once the helicopter arrives to get everyone out. That's right, this is straight up betrayal, and one wonders what controls will be in place to keep every mission from turning into four people quadruple-crossing one another the whole time. Can't see for sure what that would be in this video, but it's a cool twist nonetheless.

The Division launches March 8 on PS4, PC and Xbox One

Ubisoft dated The Division for March 8 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The game also will stage betas on all of those platforms early next year. Ubisoft made the announcement after introducing what sounds like the PvP zone of The Division. It's "the dark zone," a contaminated area set in the heart of Manhattan. Here's a video of the action. The difference is teammates can double-cross one another, as the demonstration shows once it's time to extract. Guess someone's getting a poor peer review at The Division.

King's Quest: A Knight to Remember hits in late July on PlayStation and Xbox

The first chapter of developer The Odd Gentlemen's reimagined version of King's Quest is called King's Quest: A Knight to Remember and will arrive on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC in late July, publisher Sierra announced today. Polygon saw some of the first chapter during a recent visit to the developer's Los Angeles office, and it's clear that the adventure game series is being reborn in the hands of loving fans who want the broadest audience possible to play the game. King's Quest: A Knight to Remember is a family game — and not a children's game — the developers explained. They want to create something that the entire family can play together and enjoy. Think of it like a Pixar movie, the kind of entertainment that transcends age barriers. M...

FIFA 16 is getting significant design upgrades

Late last month, Electronic Arts heralded the arrival of women's soccer as a big change coming to FIFA 16. But there are also many significant design tweaks and improvements coming to this year's game. The company announced at E3 today that it has significantly upgraded defensive AI, so that strikers will find it more difficult to game the system. Chief among these is a much smarter system for intercepting through-balls from the midfield. I played a demo at a recent media event and found the alertness of AI players much enhanced and the overall experience greatly improved as a result. Players are less likely to stand around gawping as balls are played into open spaces, and are more likely to anticipate the sort of passes that we see in professional soccer all the time. They...
