About SEPnet

To most, the South East Physics Network is better known as SEPnet, a consortium of physics departments in seven universities. All working together to deliver excellence in physics, we're leading the way with a fresh approach to collaboration, teaching and research.

Our vision

Acting as a virtual department, our vision is to bring together the expertise of all seven universities, whilst maintaining autonomous, independent institutions. Supported by a five year HEFCE grant of £12.5m, we're achieving this through four main initiatives:

An outreach programme to increase student interest and enrolment in physics
Development of a combined Graduate School offering a two year MSc in Physics, based on the European ECTS system
A collaborative research programme at PhD level
A programme of employer engagement to increase our graduate skills base, explore industry-education partnerships, and support employability initiatives

Each takes us a step closer to promoting the benefits of physics to students and businesses alike, throughout South East England and beyond. More specifically, this includes:

Research training and joint postgraduate teaching at our collaborative Graduate School
Research on four main themes (Atomic & Condensed Matter, Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Radiation Detection & Instrumentation), attuned to the strengths and needs of the region and providing opportunities for cross-regional collaboration
Building links with regional employers to benefit our research, teaching and national economy
Collaborative development of curriculum materials at undergraduate and postgraduate level
A programme of support and information for schools and the public to promote physics
