We are happy to announce the 5-th International Linguistics Olympiad for secondary school students
that is to take place from July, 31 to August, 4, 2007 in St.Petersburg, Russia



The team leader must submit a final application by May 31, 2007; it must contain a list of team members, indicating their languages of preference for the problem sets of the individual contest, as well as the language of preference for the team contest.

2007-08-02.Excursion to St. Petersburg. Fortunately, the weather was fine and the city looked very bright.
2007-08-01.The day of individual contest. The contestants were to solve 5 problems during 6 hours. Meanwhile, the organizing committee and team leaders gathered to solve some other problems. It was decided that each country can send to the Olympiad 2 (3 for the hosting country) teams and only one of them will be sponsored by the organizing committee. In the evening all the participants and guests were proposed to take part in the team games. This event was organized by a professional animator Daria Molgacheva with the help of a group of volunteers from St. Petersburg. We hope that the main purpose of these games - international friendship - was successfully reached.
2007-07-31.By today all the participants have safely arrived at the hotel. At 5.05 p.m. the 5th International Linguistics Olympiad was officially declared open. The teams, jury members and guests were greeted by the Chair of the Organising Committee Stanislav Gurevich, Moscow linguist Leonid Iomdin and vice-principal of St. Petersburg school �371 specializing in mathematics and languages Grigory Mednikov. Also the contestants were thoroughly instructed by the senior jury member Ivan Derzhanski on effective solving of the problems and proper presentation of the results. Everybody is waiting for the individual contest! :)

The Fifth International Linguistics Olympiad

Invited for�participation are�teams consisting of�one team leader and�four contestants who�at�the time of�the Fifth International Olympiad must be�secondary school students or�must have graduated from secondary school in�2007. Teams may�represent individual countries as�well as�cities (one team per�city; the�Organising Committee also reserves the�right to�impose a�limit on�the number of�teams allowed from one�country).


Competitors will need no�special knowledge to�solve the�problem sets presented at�the International Olympiad. There will be�two contests: an�individual and�a�team one. Individual contest usually takes longer and�represents a�list of�about 5 problems to�be solved during 5 or�6 hours; team contest is�naturally being solved by�the whole team together and�takes less time.


Teams and�their leaders are�expected to�be provided with free accommodation and�meals during the�Olympiad; we�also hope to�organise some excursions. Those requiring a�visa to�enter Russia will receive assistance with the�formalities.
