Announcement

Since JAXP 1.3 was first released in 2005, there has been two update releases, 1.3.1 in 2005 and 1.3.2 in 2006. Although JAXP 1.3 has been integrated into JDK 5.0, the standalone form has been maintained in order to provide users who rely on J2SE 1.4.2 and early releases the features found in JAXP 1.3. As J2SE 1.4.2 has begun the Sun End of Life (EOL) process, and JDK 5.0 has reached Update 14, the necessity of maintaining standalone JAXP 1.3 no longer exists. With this announcement therefore, we are declaring the End of Life for the JAXP 1.3 standalone on java.net.

What this means

• Standalone Release
  The JAXP 1.3 Standalone Releases, e.g. 1.3.0, 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 can still be downloaded from the JAXP project on Java.net. However, there will be no further releases for JAXP 1.3.
  
  For users who wants to take advantage of the current JAXP releases, JAXP 1.4 may be a better choice. JAXP 1.4 supports JDK 1.4, JDK 5.0, JDK6.0 and is currently in development in JDK 7.
  
  
• Sources on java.net
  The JAXP 1.3 for JDK5.0 branch will still be available from jaxp-sources.java.net. But any changes made for JAXP in JDK 5.0 will not be merged back into this branch.
  
  
• Bug fixes
  Critical bugs found in JAXP 1.3 will be fixed in JDK 5.0. The fixes would then be available through JDK 5.0 Update Releases.
  
  

Future development

The JAXP development will be focused on JAXP 1.4. We're planning to have JAXP 1.4.3 release in the March timeframe. In the meantime, JAXP 1.4 will no longer support JDK 1.4 once the JDK 1.4 EOL process completes.
