Issues and Concerns
Save With Sam!
The State Auditor is charged with 4 primary responsibilities:
- Accounting for all of the State’s Funds
- Paying bills incurred by the State (Accounts Payable)
- Paying the State’s employees
- Disbursing tax distributions to local government units
In short, the State Auditor spends your tax dollars.
I believe these responsibilities uniquely enable the State Auditor to:
- Constantly look for ways to save and conserve tax dollars
- Hold vendors and state agencies accountable for their usage of public funds
As your State Auditor, I will immediately move to do five things:
- Implement a more robust accounts payable and contract audit process – some analysts believe this will save taxpayers as much as $10 million annually.
- Advocate for top-down government reform – dozens of State agencies are involved in financial planning, consolidation at the State level will save money and eliminate mistakes and be a much more strategic approach than the township-reform proposals.
- Increase use of Electronic Records – state financial records are currently stored on microfiche, technology developed in the 1940s.
- Improve Accessibility of Public Information – every transaction the State conducts should be easily searched online.
- Work with other State Officials to more accurately project State’s finances – a more proactive approach will eliminate the need for the “nickel and dime” cuts proposed by the Daniels administration.
