PROLOGUE

I am very glad to bring out the E-book edition (CD version) of the Gazetteer of Bombay City and Island. This CD version is produced under the scheme of preparing compact discs of earlier published District Gazetteers.

The Gazetteer for Bombay City and Island was compiled in three volumes by S. M. Edwardes, in 1909. These volumes provide authentic and useful information on several aspects of the district and are considered to be of great value to administrators, scholars and general readers. The revised edition of this gazetteer was published in 1986-1987. But the old gazetteer published during the British regime contained much valuable information, which was not reproduced in the revised edition. Considering its utility, need was felt to preserve this treasure of knowledge. Therefore, the department decided to reprint these volumes. Accordingly the three volumes of Bombay City and Island were reprinted in 1977 and 1978. In this age of modernization, information and technology have become key words. To keep pace with the changing need of hour, I have decided to bring out a CD version of this edition that comprises of all the three volumes. It is also made available on the website of the State Government www.maharashtra.gov.in. I am sure, scholars and studious persons across the world will find this CD immensely beneficial.

I am thankful to the Honourable Minister, Shri.  Ashokrao Chavan (Industries and Mines, Cultural Affairs and Protocol), and the Minister of State, Shri. Rana Jagjitsinh Patil (Agriculture, Industries and Cultural Affairs), Shri. Bhushan Gagrani, (Secretary, Cultural Affairs) and Government of Maharashtra for being a constant source of inspiration.

The old Gazetteers of the State published in the British regime contained some invaluable information which was not reproduced in the revised volumes. These Gazetteers had gone out of stock and were not available and the wealth of information given therein was in the danger of being denied to posterity. There was also a popular demand for reprinting the old series. As such it was thought that the Gazetteer volumes in the old series should be reprinted. This is the reprinted edition of the same. I am thankful to the Director, Government Printing and Stationery, Shri S. A. Sapre and Shri G. D. Dhond, Manager, Government Photozinco Press, Pune and the other staff in the press for expeditiously completing the work of reprinting.
