'The Amazing Race': Horsing around in Argentina

February 28, 2010 | 10:18 pm

98759_D6276  And that's why it pays to read the clues.

This week's episode of "The Amazing Race" took the contestants from Chile to Argentina, where they searched the Andes for gunslingers, Travelocity gnomes, stolen money, fake horses and bandits.

What was missing for several teams was the ability to read the directions that they were given, whether that was to count the appropriate steps while searching for buried cash or where they had to go next.

But one team--models Caite and Brent--were nearly out of the race before the leg even began as they succumbed to something resembling food poisoning... and promptly checked themselves into a Chilean emergency room for three hours of IV drips before heading back out on the road. Very luckily, they weren't due to depart Chile for several hours and managed to get back in the race with little issue. (Darn.)

I felt bad for Caite and Brent on the one hand. The race is a brutal master, and there's no place for illness when you're competing for a $1-million prize and getting little R&R. But really, the emergency room? I understand if you're unable to keep fluids down and are extremely dehydrated, but I can't help but wonder what was in those IV drips that suddenly made them feel better after just three hours of lying in a stark hospital room.

The 'Lost' weekend: 'Lost' takes the Paley Festival by storm

February 28, 2010 |  9:11 pm

118261_029_pre  When "Lost" came to the Paley Festival in its first season back in 2005, it arrived as one of the hottest shows on the dial, one of the next big things of the TV season. It had proved that there was an audience for complicated action-adventure storytelling with a strong serialized streak and compelling characters on network television. At that first panel, some of the biggest questions involved just what would turn out to be in that infernal hatch and which of the cast members would be the first to die (in an episode that had been shot but had not aired). It was an evening to celebrate a show no one ever thought they would fall out of love with.

Now, five more seasons, innumerable plot twists and one complicated relationship with its fan base later, "Lost" returned to the Paley stage to celebrate its final episodes, and the event was more of a coronation. The cheers from the crowd for the producers and actors on hand were deafening, the screening of new footage was greeted with hushed excitement, and every little bit of information on the show past or present from the panelists' lips was given something approaching the reverence of holy writ. It wasn't an evening to treat "Lost" with complete reverence--indeed, the panel was downright irreverent toward some of its own members---but it was an evening to luxuriate in just how much the show had changed things and just how much everyone in the audience would miss it when it's gone.

Answering the questions and queries of moderator Paul Scheer (of comedy troupe Human Giant) and various fans were a collection of more producers than actors, and the panel leaned more heavily on actors who'd joined the show since that first season. Even without a huge contingent from the cast, though, the crowd of nearly 1,900 didn't mind. They enjoyed seeing these people gathered together for what will be one of the last times. (Indeed, the writers are in the beginning phases of plotting out the two-hour finale right now, while the actors and others on set have just wrapped filming on the 14th hour out of 18 total hours.) Attending were co-creator Damon Lindelof; co-showrunner Carlton Cuse; writer/producers Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz and Elizabeth Sarnoff; director/producer (and the show's main man on the Hawaii-based set) Jack Bender; and actors Nestor Carbonell (the seemingly ageless Richard Alpert), Zuleikha Robinson (the still-mysterious Ilanna), Michael Emerson (the always shifty Ben Linus) and Terry O'Quinn (stoic survivalist John Locke and his evil doppelganger, introduced this season).

Conan Twitter Tracker: Freckles, a monkey and a Sharpie join the fray

February 28, 2010 | 12:52 pm

Freckles-713259-sw
Show Tracker is very embarrassed.  We know that monitoring an 8.8 quake and possible tsunamis is no excuse to neglect our Conan Twitter Tracking. We acknowledge we have missed important developments, and we are sorry.

But now that we are focused again on our No. 1 priority, we can tell you that the plot thickens. Conan's freckles are now tweeting. In response to a post Friday about Conan's beard tweeting and only having 25 followers, Conan's freckles posted a revealing comment on Show Tracker:  "25 followers? I'd kill for 25 followers. And I'M the one who's sending secret connect-the-dots messages to the Chosen One (a.k.a. Coco/ Conan/ Man Who Makes Out With Dolphins). I deserve better. But hey, man, it's hard out there for a freckle."

Coco's monkey, MoCo, and his Sharpie also are tweeting. "Not easy being @ConanOBrien 's favorite marker. I've got 15 pages of permanent ink left in me and trying to limit my comments to 140 charac," the Sharpie wrote.  "Liza just handed me a diaper ... I'm not sure why!" the Monkey tweeted.

Conan's beard remains the most industrious of the six tweeters. (Remember, there is a Squirrel too).  It also seems to appreciate Show Tracker's attention: "I'm famous!" it tweeted, adding a link to the post in which we first told you of its existence.

But in a sign that this could all be over soon, Conan just tweeted: "This is only my 5th tweet and I’m already exhausted. My God, how does Ashton do it?"

The Squirrel didn't miss a beat: "Ashton's squirrel just Direct Messaged me. He's kinda a tool."

The freckles were more supportive:  "Ashton may have you on the stamina thing, but you kick his ... in the total freckles body coverage thing. Never forget that."

Here's how they're all sizing up in the follower countdown:

Conan 442,296
Squirrel 1,191
Beard 144
Monkey 51
Freckles 14
Sharpie 10

'Caprica': 'There is Another Sky' and Tamara the terminator

February 27, 2010 |  9:42 am

"Caprica" really is a soap opera, and the "There is Another Sky" episode displays that genre's multiple-plot format really well. Just as viewers started to believe that the plight of Zoe Graystone and Lacy Rand was probably the central and most interesting storyline, in steps a few more pretty good side plots that include Tamara Adama (portrayed ably by Genevieve Buechner) -- the indestructible avatar -- and her adventures through the looking glass of V World.

Tamara

Tamara the Terminator is sent on a mission to New Cap City, another section of V World, by Vesta, a not-on-the-right-side-of-the-tracks game player, to take out another powerful game player. If she completes this favor, Vesta says she will help Tamara be restored outside of V World. The intrigue, suspense and action of this plot is interrupted by ...

Joseph and Willie Adama. A father trying to reconnect to a son that has been distant since, and probably before, his mother and sister were killed. Uncle Sam is kind of the nexus for both father and son: a connection to a father figure and family for Willie, and a connection to the past, family and tradition for Joseph. There's anger, resentment and a deep-seated need from both father and son to get back to their cultural Tauron roots. Family drama, and just as the kid lashes out ...

Conan Twitter Tracker: a tale of red-headed men, squirrels and beards

February 26, 2010 |  5:04 pm

0215_conan_obrien_splash
This Conan Twitter Tracking business is getting a little worrisome.

Not only have we heard from Coco and his Squirrel again today. Now, Conan's beard is also tweeting at us.

Someone is taking crazy pills.  And maybe it's us for following this insanity.

Five hours ago, Conan tweeted: "Today I connected all the freckles on my arm with a Sharpie. It spells out RIKSHAZ9LIRK. Clearly I am The Chosen One."

At the same time, the Squirrel tweeted: "Hey, where's my sharpie?"

So far of the three tweeters, the beard is the most prolific, posting three tweets, one response to a fellow tweeter, and a special note for Coco: "Thank you for taking me to Hawaii."

While Conan already has registered 399,255 followers, the Squirrel hasn't reached 1,000 and the beard, poor thing, only has 25.

But can you blame the world? Who wants to follow that thing?

Pilot Season: First look at NBC's 2010 comedy pilots

February 26, 2010 |  2:42 pm
Getprev-4 It's been a while since NBC had a successful sitcom, so the network has gone back to its "Friends" and "Seinfeld" roots, ordering five multi-camera comedies in addition to five single-camera, the format that has worked better for NBC in recent years.

"Reno 911!" co-creators Tom Lennon and Ben Garant have co-written and are starring in "The Strip," a sitcom about a former child star who becomes a Hooters-style-bar-owner (Lennon)  in the outskirts of Las Vegas.  The cast also includes Cedric Yarbrough ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin"), Natasha Leggero ("He's Just Not That Into You"), Andrea Savage, and Dave Holmes and Carrie Wiita, both of "Reno: 911!"

"Nathan vs. Nurture"
stars Jay Harrington ("Better Off Ted"), pictured right, and Bill Pullman ("Independence Day"), Getprev-2 pictured left, and was co-written by Moses Port and David Guarascio, both of "Just Shoot Me." The sitcom features an overachieving heart surgeon (Harrington) who reunites with his birth father (Pullman) and underachieving brothers 35 years after his adoption. Great casting. I'm in.

"Newsradio" scribe Paul Simms has penned "Beach Lane," produced by Lorne Michaels, about a celebrity author hired by an irresponsible millionaire heir to run his struggling small-town newspaper in the Hamptons. No one has been cast.

"This Little Piggy" was co-written by Stephen Cragg and Brian Bradley, both of "Scrubs," and so far includes Ben Koldyke ("Big Love") and Erinn Hayes ("Worst Week") in the cast. It's a family comedy about a father of two whose dream for a peaceful household is shattered when his under-employed sister and materialistic brother move in.

"American Dad" scribes Rick Weiner and Kenny Schwartz have co-written "The Pink House," about two buddies who move to Los Angeles to begin the next chapter of their post-college lives.  No one has been cast.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' spinoff: Class is in session

February 26, 2010 |  2:42 pm

Getprev-6
Oh. My. God. Do we have dragalicious news for you!

A "RuPaul's Drag Race" spinoff is in the works. "Drag U" is a special university that enrolls "biological women" in an attempt to get them in touch with their inner divas.

And who are the professors? "RuPaul's Drag Race" contestants, that's who!

Can you imagine taking makeup lessons from Raven? Or picking up self-love tips from Nina Flowers? Or overall fabulousness instruction from Queen Bebe?

Each episode will feature three women going to drag school, and they will be evaluated based on their Drag Point Average. Think "Drag Queen for a Day" meets "Extreme Drag Makeover," sources told Show Tracker.

There is a winner at the end, but everyone's a winner on Draguation Day.

Especially the viewers. With RuPaul, Jessica Wild, Pandora Boxx and Tatianna in our lives, could life get any better? Apparently.

Pilot Season: First look at NBC's 2010 drama pilots

February 26, 2010 |  1:09 pm

Becki-newton-picture NBC has been busy ordering drama pilots to make up for the void in its 10 p.m. time slot. The nine shows fall in the following categories: one remake, one almost remake, three action, three legal and one supernatural.

"The Rockford Files," you might guess, is the remake. Written by David Shore ("House") and produced by Steve Carell, it kinda makes you go hmm. No one has been cast.

"Love Bites," a dramedy in the style of "Love, American Style," was written by Cindy Chupak ("Men In Trees," "Sex and the City" and "Everybody Loves Raymond") and features Becki Newton, pictured left, ("Ugly Betty") as one of the leads. For those two reasons alone, I would check this out. Newton and Jordana Spiro ("My Boys") will play the only regulars in the anthology series that will be told in vignettes. Fran and Annie are the last two single girls standing after all their friends get married and they will thread through the series. Greg Grunberg ("Heroes")  is a guest star in the pilot.

The three action dramas have interesting people behind and in front of the camera.

"The Event," by Nick Wauters ("The 4400"), is a thriller told with multiple points of view, centering on a regular guy who is fighting his way through a mysterious conspiracy. It stars Jason Ritter ("Joan of Arcadia"). The cast also includes Saran Roemer ("Disturbia"), Scott Peterson, Zjelko Ivanek ("Damages," "Big Love"), Ian Anthony Dale ("The Hangover"), and Taylor Cole ("Secret Girlfriend").

"Cold Case" scribe Jennifer Johnson has penned "Chase," produced by Jerry Bruckheimer TV, which follows a team of U.S. marshals in a game of cat and mouse with the most-wanted criminals they chase. The cast includes Kelli Giddish ("Past Life"), Cole Hauser ("Good Will Hunting"), Jesse Metcalfe ("Desperate Housewives"), Amaury Nolasco ("Prison Break"), Rose Rollins ("The L-Word"). Based solely on its director, I am calling this one as a series pickup. David Nutter currently holds the winningest record of directing pilots that go to series. "Eastwick" last year made him 15 for 15. (But Nolasco is a sweet plus.)

J.J. Abrams and Josh Reims have written "Undercovers," about a husband and wife who, after a few years of retirement, are reactivated as agents for the CIA. Working together for the first time, they rediscover their passion for each other. The cast includes Boris Kodjoe ("Soul Food"), Gugu Mbatha-Raw, ("Doctor Who"), Gerald McRaney ("Jericho" and "Deadwood"), Jessica Parker Kennedy ("Kaya"), writer-actor Ben Schwartz and Carter MacIntyre ("American Heiress"). I wonder if they wind up living on an island with the Observer.

'Real Housewives of Orange County': Nip Tuck

February 26, 2010 |  9:29 am

Alexis bellino I really wish the folks over at Bravo would quit playing games with my heart. Don’t tease me with a cameo appearance by old school housewife Jeana and then take her away! That’s just cruel. Did anyone else find it refreshing to see Jeana and Vicki back together? They’re the next iconic pairing of friends in TV land. Kind of like Laverne and Shirley…or Mary and Rhoda … Monica and Rachel? I’m taking it too far? You’re probably right.

My giddiness over the on-screen reunion would quickly fade when that frilly intro shot of Alexis graced the screen. You know the one … she’s in that purple dress, blowing kisses to the camera. If that wasn’t ridiculous enough, move your eyes toward the travesty in the upper right hand corner. There’s Jimbo, holding his two daughters as if they’re monkeys. Wonder how much she had to pay him to do that.

As expected, things would only go downhill from there. Alexis’ mom, Penelope, is town.

Ugh. Wait. There’s that fuchsia getup again.

Back to the programming ...

Penelope made the trip from Colorado for some physical maintenance. And who better than her daughter to show her the way? Penelope wanted a brow lift to get rid of some sagginess. But once that doctor sat in his chair, it became a complete overhaul on her face. He started spewing out suggestions like she was a car coming in for a tune-up. Brow lift. Upper eye lid surgery. Thin this muscle out. Tighten that out. Reposition fat. Get rid of smile lines. Laser the lower eyelids. Oh, and at some point, do permanent eyeliner (ouch!) and get a laser peel. Why bother with all that? Just put a paper bag over your head. It’s cheaper.

And can we all take a moment to say “What was that about?” I’m referring to the Alexis infomercial midway through the show. I don’t care that she grew up in Missouri and climbed treehouses and crossed creeks. And there was no violin in sight for me to play when she went on to describe being an outcast: “It was very difficult growing up in Missouri being the kind of girl that I am because in Missouri girls wear jeans and T-shirts. They don’t wear a lot of makeup. They're just very simple. But I always had a tan going; I always had makeup--lots of makeup. I wore heels at, like, 13. Everybody always said to me that I looked like I belong in California.” My heart bleeds with pity. Not. I had to rewind three times just to make sure it wasn’t a joke. And then when her mother recalled how Alexis never wanted to walk to school because her hair might smell like air, all I could do was shake my head. Don’t get me started on her nibbling of the bread.

And the way she described her mother? Plain. Washed out. Simple. “She doesn’t like to take the time to do her hair and makeup, which  ... she doesn’t work so I don’t really know what else she's doing. She should do her hair and makeup.” Now we know what Alexis does with her time—as if we didn’t already.

My frustration with that whole scenario would ease with an appearance by Lynne. Regardless of what you think of the bronzed cuff-maker, she never fails at providing some good one-liners. Side note: Who is impressed by the amount of cuffs Lynne sports each episode? That lady is committed to those wrist things; they’re like permanently attached. I wonder if she has cuff tan line. Oh, right, the one liner … how great was her reason Frank would never cheat: “He’s germophobic, he would never cheat on me.” It’s stuff like that that tempts me to buy a piece of her bondage jewelry. One day, Lynne. One day.

Later in the episode, viewers witnessed Tamra’s less-than-fun-looking birthday lunch party. She was visibly irritated that Vicki didn't show up. To make matters worse, Vicki sent her assistant to the shindig with a gift. A classless gesture to some. To me, it was brilliant. And here’s why: “Who has a birthday party on Tuesday at 11 o’clock? I'm working. Always working. In the middle of the day I'm working,” a frazzled Vicki says in her one-on-one interview. I couldn’t agree more.

In other news, Gretchen’s booth at the Women’s Expo was a bust. Alexa and Raquel are considering getting a “parent whisperer” to knock some sense into Lynne and Frank (go for it!) and Simon still doesn’t think he’s controlling. This coming from a dude who says Hitler had a good side.

Show Trackers, what did you think of the episode? Am I being too harsh on Alexis? Should Alexa and Raquel get a parent whisperer? Have you bought one of Lynne’s cuffs?

Evan Lysacek on 'Dancing With the Stars'?

February 26, 2010 |  9:10 am

Flag

He’s conquered the Olympics. So naturally, the next step for gold medal-winning figure skater Evan Lysacek would be to conquer … a reality dance show competition? The Los Angeles-based Lysacek told EW.com he’d like to be a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.”

“I would love to try ‘Dancing With the Stars,’” he told EW in an e-mail. “I was a proud audience member (and cheerleader) as my friends Kristi Yamaguchi and Apolo Ohno danced their way to the Mirrorball trophy. All I have heard from everyone that has done the show is what a blast it is. That could be a good way for me to do something extremely challenging, but also fun to celebrate my Olympic win.”

This, coming off the recent news that Lysacek has opted not to compete in ice skating’s World Championships next month in Turin. Italy. Could he be clearing his schedule for a chance for a spin on the rectagon floor instead?

Season 10’s contestants will be announced during the “Bachelor” finale March 1. What do you think of Lysacek on “DWTS"? Who should he be paired up with?

'America's Best Dance Crew': The video challenge takes its toll

February 26, 2010 |  7:52 am

The music video challenge on "Randy Jackson Presents America's Best Dance Crew" is usually one that crews really get into, but there were only a handful of Thursday night's squads that seemed comfortable stepping outside of themselves to incorporate someone else's moves. An added layer of pressure, as explained by host Mario Lopez, was that the video would also be playing behind the crews on the big screen. Definitely another thing that the judges and the viewers voting at home will be able to use when evaluating or voting.

Poreotix The first six crews were the high-vote getters, and Poreotix was first announced. The comedic crew showed me something different in performing to Rihanna's "Umbrella." They added a little dancing with the robotics and threw in a bit of the sexy (after all, it is Rihanna). They weren't able to tell a story as much because of the challenge itself -- having to mimic Riri -- but that storytelling ability of theirs should never be lost, if possible. That's their edge. The judges? JC was not impressed at all, saying that besides their "light-speed wave," there wasn't much complicated about it. Omarion and I were thinking the same thing when he said, "I wish you'd have brought it to life a little differently."

Jungle Boogie was the next crew. They stayed straight animal with their interpretation. Shakira's "Give it up to me" and her animalistic sounds helped, but it was JB who brought it out.  Then they did some stepping (shout-out to Strikers All-Stars)?! I thought it'd be odd, but it worked well. JC was right when mentioning that some of the crew were "apprehensive" while stepping, since they weren't as confident with it. Raqi, whom Lil Mama thanked for "bringing the extra sexy in the building," helped propel the group by being uncharacteristically in character. This crew has been consistently strong.

'Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains': Parvati and Russell get too close for tribe's comfort

February 25, 2010 | 11:25 pm

98305_D06936 I know a lot happened on tonight's episode of "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains," but the events are clouded by one horrible visual:

Parvati actually cuddled with Russell. So. Gross.

OK, OK. I know it's cold out there on the island of Samoa, and everyone must be yearning for some physical interaction. But Russell is married -- remember that lovely lady he introduced to the audience during last season's finale? And sure, Parvati is arguably the biggest flirt in the history of "Survivor," so the whole thing probably meant nothing to her. But still. I was shocked to see the two spooning. So shocked, in fact, that I actually tweeted at Parvati (full disclosure: the account isn't verified, so it could technically be an impostor--we're asking CBS) to ask how she could do such a thing.

"You do what you gotta do when you're a gamer ;)" she wrote. "you'd do it too. i know you would."

I don't know about that one, especially because the whole cuddling fiasco seemingly got Parvati nowhere with her tribe other than into hot water.

Boston Rob, who continually keeps proving he's one of the best players in history, said it best: "Whoever is sleeping next to who ... it will tell you who's aligned with who."

February 25, 2010 | 10:29 pm
Gillian-zinser-ivy-90210-cw She’s the girl who rode into "90210" on a surfboard with beach hair, developed a crush on Matt Lanter’s Liam and, soon, she’ll be AnnaLyne McCord’s character Naomi's nemesis. Gillian Zinser plays West Bev newbie and the sole female surf team member, Ivy, and now it seems she’s sticking around for a while.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The CW has promoted Gillian Zinser to a series regular on "90210."

While we’re a bit shocked by the news, we really shouldn’t be. Last October, the show made a splash when it was announced that “L Word” actress Kelly Lynch was cast as Ivy’s mother. That should have been a sign that we should pay more attention to the character.

Are you riding the Ivy wave?
