Victorian Opera's 2008 season is one full of fascinating juxtapositions.
It places one of the oldest works in the repertoire, The Coronation of Poppea, beside a new 21st century work, Alan John and Andrew Upton's strikingly imagined re-examination of Lewis Carroll's classic Through the Looking-Glass.
It pits the frothy and lyrical optimism of The Elixir of Love against the (temporary) triumph of lust and ambition in Poppea, and contrasts the sacred lyricism of Puccini's early religious mass with the charming but ill-fated heroines of his later operas.
Above all it celebrates the power of the voice, to entertain, move and delight us.
