After a leviathanic career that spanned the cream of French, Italian and Scottish football as well as 32 England caps, Hateley came to Hull with a massive reputation and a lot to prove. The whole town buzzed with excitement at a big name signing sure to deliver twenty goals a season.
The one thing we all suspected his teams would NOT lack was passion. It was therefore strange that in his fifteen months at the helm City played skilful yet not very committed football. Hateley scored his first and last goal from open play at Scarborough in October 1998, a lovely sliding conversion in the McCain mud. As he celebrated with the City hordes he surely knew his days were numbered - and so it proved once Belton ousted the evil Lloyd.
